#1 Mistake Student Coaches Make

Common mistakes student coaches make:

1. Fixing. Wanting to be the solution is the antithesis of coaching. Coaching is about helping another person deepen learning about themselves. 00:38

It's our deep listening and curiosity on behalf of the client that helps them identify: How did I get in this problem in the first place? What is it that needs to be addressed and resolved? And ultimately be a choice about how they forward the action.

2. More is better than less. One of the things to pay attention to is how much air time you have versus your client. Over time, you'll find that your work becomes more artful - it will be very much client-led and they'll have much more air time than you. 01:47

3. Not finishing. Remember, you're not there just to deepen the learning; you're also there to forward the action - not you fixing, but asking the questions that are a test of commitment, helping the client identify when they are available and ready to implement as a result of what they learned in the session. 02:51

What is it that they will set up and change their routine about, or lean into a resource or a partner? How will they celebrate and acknowledge when they're successful? Not finishing gives them a good feeling about a session, but they forget it a day later when they're back in the busy-ness of their lives.

The #1 mistake student coaches make is: Coaches are waiting way too long to engage with a mentor coach. Your mentor coach is your partner - it's a collegial conversation, peer-to-peer, working on a specific recording, helping you recognize your natural strengths, how you are demonstrating the core competencies, and where the choice points or opportunities are for you to strengthen and add in skills you might not be using. 04:13

When you get that feedback, go and practice. 4-6 hours is what we recommend. Notice that you're starting to coach a little differently, and then come back again. Meet with your mentor coach and get confirmation that your skills are developing and what's the next stretch for you.

This way, you actually accelerate your own development, and as a result, you are absolutely coaching at the level you want to be when it's time to submit your recordings for your ICF credential.

06: 38 Remember, the ICF requires for a new certification or up-leveling to another certification that you must have 10 hours of group coaching - 7 can be in a group format, at least 3 in an individual format.
