Great tips, one of the first things I learned with my 1st kayak was how to flip it and self rescue...way different experience with a large kayak weighing almost 100lbs, plus gear.

i would like to add as a reminder to many people on kayaks that practicing self rescue is really important. its difficult to imagine that you will end up in the water and that your kayak will be upsidedown, BUT IT WILL HAPPEN! if the first time for you is out in the wind and chop and some current, you could end up in real danger, as moo moo ajushi is warning us about here. please consider sacrificing a day out on the water fishing for a day out in a cove practicing self rescue. i was very grateful i had learned because once i got dumped by a power boat who was traveling too fast and turned a corner. the wake got me in an unexpected way.

Moo.... THANKS for caring enough to provide this important message. I've learned a lot of these lessons the hard way too in my nearly 20 years of kayak fishing. ARW is no joke and can't be underestimated. I was luckily there to help out when the two kayakers flipped at the end of the 2nd wall.

Great wind tips, totally agree with your summary. I got rolled this past April 2023, 1st time ever in a Hobie PA14 no less!!
The occurrence was due to a boat wake, charter boat (not to be named here) to be specific. They were headed back north, as I was heading back to Oyster Point launch. Passed 30' away from me, all passengers in the charter cabin. The boat's huge wake was going one way, the wind waves the other. I made it over the 1st wake wave ok, the 2nd wake met opposite wind wave and over I went.
Charter boat just kept on going.
Self-rescued as not my 1st time rolling a yak, but the SHOCK of feeling that cold water on my face almost made me panic. My outer clothes soaked almost immediately, my farmer john wetsuit underneath, LP did their job. No gear was lost as all was secured as I was heading back in.

One more thing to avoid when you’re at ARW is the fisherman on the rocks. One time the wind and current picked up and I was not paying attention and I got snagged with another fisherman line from shore. I ended up cutting the line and getting a little scraped up on the rocks there

pulled a yaker out off coyote point on a really sloppy day earlier this year. guy was wearing chest waders. we barely got him in the boat and nearl swamped dragging him over the transom but all ended well.

The wind and current gets nuts at ARW sometimes. If you are north of the wall on outgoing it is a bear getting back. Whitecaps on the bay is not fun either. Thanks for the tips, Moo! See you out there!

the tide turn is not a joke... i remember i had to paddle in on outgoing tide and it was very difficult.. at that time i did not know to paddle inside the wall. was the last time i took kayak out there..

I remember when I first fished ARW I got caught in the afternoon wind and ripping current. Honestly, I pretty scared since the guy I went out with already went back in and conditions got super bad. It took me almost 2 hours to get back. From there on, I always made a point to check the wind and tide forecast as well set a rule of thumb to be back in by noon. Definitely good to share with those new in this sport!

During TLC tournament it took me forever to come back. I overshot the launch when using the current to come back and had to fight the current. Had the boat following me for a good chunk of time 😅 I made it though

I know in and out in ARW. But outside the gate, I flipped kayak many times when surf landing, Human against nature, never win😂
