More than 20 years after 9/11 and the Cole bombing, the alleged masterminds of these attacks haven't gone to trial.

VICE went to the Military Commissions at Guantanamo Bay, a secretive legal process where prosecutors seek the death penalty for men who were tortured by the CIA.

I can't remember the exact quote, but a German legal professional basically said, "Once you build something entirely outside the law, it's very hard to use the law to resolve it."

"The evidence is gathered differently" 😂
They will say anything to justify what they did to people they already deem guilty.

If any other country did this the US would condemn them as "kidnapping terrorists." Crazy...

Imagine calling yourself a patriot and then supporting indefinite detention without charge...SMH

I agree completely with the defense attorney. You can't try someone using evidence that was obtained during torture. I also empathize with Lippold. Terrorists should be held accountable. But we have to first prove beyond resonable doubt that they are the terrorists. And evidence that is obtained during torture should not be admissible.

It also does not surprise me that these men are still awaiting trial. We don't treat American citizens charged with petty crimes humanely. So, I wouldn't expect suspected terrorists to be either. Our entire justice system is a stain on the American reputation.

Why does Israel
Detain people without any charges? Isn’t that a violation of international law? Why is Israel not sanctioned?

So it's basically a black site that people are aware of.

Crazy

Most people think they're getting 'death' but they're just bargaining chips for future trades

Justice should have been very swift and very appropriate. No reason to continue holding them this long.

it’s a shame to see Vice go, despite some political pandering in the recent years . Vice sincerely deserves all the flowers for the active and confrontational journalism they’ve provided to the public . From watching Taj’s videos to watching an in depth presentation on a current issue in our world, not many can do that. Bravo

Inhumane is an understatement.
This is just evil.

Are they guilty? We don’t know because they’ve never been brought to trial. No matter who you are or what you’ve done, no one should be subjected to torture.

The fact that we could. But we don’t is what makes it heartless

THIS IS WHY THE US NEEDS TO BE A SIGNATORY TO THE ICC (International Criminal Court).

The international tribunals at Nuremburg and after the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia dealt with similar difficult questions. Between those two councils the set of rules they followed got better. The US should move forward and get better.

Wonder how many innocents still suffer there?

I recently came across an article on an artist called Moath Al Alwi who makes pretty realistic model ships using the limited materials he can gather inside of the prison, when I was looking into a Wikipedia article on the history of art censorship.

Dudes story is sad as hell. The closest relation he had to Osama Bin Laden was knowing some of the bodyguards who protected him, not even terrorists or anything. Meaning that he knew people who knew other people involved in terrorism. Hes possibly just some unfortunate random dude with zero reason to be detained but I dont know all the details.

He spends time making model ships out of rubbish because its the only thing he could really do to pass the time. Two decades of doing this straight had meant that he is now capable of making beautifully crafted models out of nothing but trash he finds. He also went through years of torture while inside the prison and was forcefully fed when he tried to go on hunger strike as peaceful protest which he described as being torturous. Apparently when praying some guards also decided to open fire on him and a few other inmates with rubber coated steel bullets because they were “provoking” the guards but it seems the guards did it just for the fun of it.

I think the prison is among one of the worst things the US has done in its history. These men are tortured daily, assaulted by the guards and forced to live as “revenge” for two decades straight, without any access to a trial to prove their innocence or lack of involvement with osama bin ladden or any terrorism. There already been a verdict that Al Alwi is most likely innocent and hasnt commited any crimes, but is “too dangerous to release” anyways.

Evidence gained from torture should not be used as someone can say anything under torture as the psychological effects on the mind may cause one to dissociate and not be of sound mind. It is unethical to use evidence from torture, and it is not credible. The fact that torture was used is beyond sickening
