i always used actuated blocks outside a door and a switch to lock doors. it also comes with the added benefit of looking making it look like a covered porch given a roof

for a decade I've always constructed my house to keep zombies out by placing the crafting bench behind it so it can only be opened by a zombie from the inside (which generally is the side they're not on)

I love this. it drives me INSANE when the stupid NPCs walk back and forth when it becomes night or open doors when monsters are attacking.

this loop is actually kinda crazy, it's one of the few video topics where you can get away with having already done the trick in the intro for a true seamless loop

It's just one of those things that make sense when you think about it but is dark magic until then

You could also use Echo platforms and actuators hooked to day/night sensors, locking the door at night.

I discovered this trick many years ago. Also prevent the inside door from being opened the wrong way and you can lock it from the outside without having to face away from the door.

This is the perfect item to keep the npc trapped so that they don't goddamn open the door in a bloodmoon
