English-speaking people obviously believe that the whole world is born and bred English-speaking. But there are far more Mandarin speakers - I think there is a certain arrogance involved.
There are also more Hispanophones (native speakers) than Anglophones. Even though English is the language of business and IT. Also, about 50 or more per cent of English vocabulary has been taken over from French and Spanish, as English would be massively word-poor...
So come down a little and don't always look at the subject from the same perspective.
By the way: until the 18th century, the island's nobility spoke exclusively in French. Everyone else in the whole of the UK could only communicate in the language of the "poor and uneducated", and that's a fact! I suspect that at that time, the plebs had to make do with a much smaller vocabulary... I'm sure that some of you will be completely surprised because "you" have never heard of it... delicious, adios!
