Antibiotic resistance (AR) is considered as one of the biggest threats to global health, food security and development today, but could pollution be playing a major role in the dissemination of the antibiotic resistant bacteria?

Dr. Maria Belen Sathicq is an AXA-supported researcher at the Water Research Institute, Italy, aiming to discover what role these small plastic particles play as a carrier of the antibiotic resistant bacteria in the marine environment.

The objective of her research is to increase our understanding of what is spreading this bacterium, consequently helping identify the hot spots of its dissemination.

About the AXA Research Fund:
We support research in environment, health, socio-economics and new technology. Our mission? Understanding uncertainty and analyzing risk for a better future. #AXARF
