This video covers how to setup the sonar on Lowrance HDS units. The settings I recommend here are designed more for the serious user looking to get the best detail and mark the most fish with their unit. The downside to setting the unit like this is that is requires more user input throughout the day when you change depths and cover. You will need to adjust the depth range according to keep the bottom in view on the screen. You’ll also have to adjust the sensitivity as you go deeper or shallower. As a rule of thumb the deeper you go the higher your sensitivity and the shallower the lower it will be.

In the USA? Shop my Amazon Influencer Store:

If you consider yourself a basic user keep the Sensitivity and Depth Range set to Auto and you will have very little to adjust on the unit after the initial setup.

Question: I just bought a 5"hook2 unit. Spent some time on the lake a couple of days ago attempting to put to use, some of the great info in the tutorials here on youtube. Ran the unit on auto a while. Then changed some of the settings suggested here to compare results. I am able to see bait, structure, and fish well in chirp. When I switch to down or side imaging most of the data is very small and hard for me to see. Despite sensitivity or contrast adjustment. It just occurred to me that stretching the image may be the answer. Would increasing the chart speed in down & side stretch the image ànd help me to see better? Zoom is akward. I would love to have been able to purchase a larger screen unit. But was unable to at this time. Later I hope to do so & use the 5 at the bow. More pixels more data ? I also bought an Xi3 GPS trolling unit. I'm seventy, and that is definitely a game changer for me! I also was blessed with an event that occured while in anchor adjusting the sonar. I noticed a disturbance about 150 ft from me. It looked to be about 10 ft in diameter and bubbles disturbing the water. I thought it might be an old leaking gas well on the lake bed. But it moved several feet as I watched. So I shut off anchor and switched on chirp and went to check it out. I was in 34 ft of water. It was a huge school of bait in a collum stretching from the bottom to the surface! 34ft! I backed off and circled around to follow them. In doing that a huge school of large predator fish appeared in my sonar screen. I was able to witness a natural but brutal assault on those bait fish and witness how the predators herded the fleeing flowing collum of bait into smaller pods untill they had had their fill and the bait had scattered to the point they couldn't be herded into groups anymore.!! Blew me AWAY! I will never forget what I saw! The technology available to us today is incredible. I was so overwhelmed I didn't even think about trying to catch whatever was feeding on the bait.! I can't wait to get out and put these tools to use. I have never had the ability to fish out in open water like I will be able to do now.

Why do these allow you to adjust scroll and ping where the elite 7 chirp does not?It will only do ping or am I mistaken?

I have the same unit and after the latest update the map looks jittery or laggy while running? Did the update wipe out all my settings? I bought my boat with the unit already setup so I'm clueless.
