Hello, Clinton! Thanks for sharing. I would like to suggest as an addendum to this list *safety gear* — eye, hearing, and dust protection. Gotta start those good safety habits early.

I started with a combo cordless tool kit (Milwaukee M18) that come with batteries and a number of tools, if you have a bigger budget then look for the brushless version of the same tools, they are lighter, battery lasts longer, and a lot more torque-ier especially the impact drivers. I don't what this comment to start a firestorm about brands - some people may hate Milwaukee... but they work for me and that's what counts for me... This is an important point for the first-time woodworkers to realize, you have to start somewhere, and choices are overwhelming, so find what you like... You can go down two paths with tool purchases: (A) get tools you can afford with the idea that one day you may change them out with something else better or (B) if budget allows, pay a little more and get tools with better specs and that you can grow into... and realize that no tool purchase is really a permanent decision... hope this helps.

Great video with lots of very good suggestions.
Some 40 years ago I purchased a Craftsman rectangular vibrating sander. Last year I purchased a Kobalt 24 volt orbital sander. WOW ! What a big difference in performance. I trashed the old Craftsman sander. One suggestion I have for the new comer....When buying cordless tools, buy the same brand with inter changeable batteries. Why have numerous different batteries and chargers to deal with? By buying the same brand with inter changeable batteries, you'll always have a spare battery so you don't have to wait for one to charge to continue on with your work.

Another great vid. Common sense for a newbie. I’m not even close to a newb having been in the trades for over twenty years. Lots of changes since I wore a hammer. Keep up the good work.

Great suggestions. I recently have gotten into wood working and purchased almost all of my tools off of Facebook Marketplace. This is a great way to start off on a budget, do some research first and know the tools and what they are worth before purchasing. Good content, keep up the good work.

I'd promote the speed square to #4 and make it one of the absolute musts. A good speed square will cost you less than ten bucks and is one of the most useful tools in anyone's collection. It's not just for marking - you can also use it as a guide when cutting lumber with a circular saw or jigsaw, to ensure that you make nice, straight, 90-degree cuts.

You can also throw in some good marking tools - a .7mm mechanical pencil for fine stuff, carpenter's pencils for larger stuff, and a standard point Sharpie for stuff that you need to read from a distance.

And of course, if you have a circular saw and a drill, you'll need a collection of drill and driver bits, and a few different saw blades. Drill and driver bits are cheap, but circular saw blades are crazy expensive, so splurge and get good ones that will last a long time.

I have most of the stuff discussed in this video. Couldn't pass up HD's recent "Ryobi Days" sale and dove in on the circular saw deal with the free accessory kit (charger, 2 batteries, carry case) and the really good sale price on the drill/driver, impact driver set (incl 1 battery + charger). Those are really working for me. Next up is a miter saw.

I once went to a yard sale and got a cordless drill for free with a battery and I went to a different yard sale and got corded circular saw for $10

Great choices for first time tools. I might rearrange the order a bit. I would move the speed square up to #4 as it adds so much versatility and precision to project layout. Also, I would add a contractor’s table saw in at #10 instead of the router, although that’s a higher budget item. The combination of a table saw and the miter saw let’s you do a LOT of things.

Along with the drill, also bits, both cutting bits and driver bits.

the battery operated nail gun has made it so much easier. you can always borrow tools to test first.

Regarding the miter saw, you really didn't go into much detail on single-bevel, dual-bevel, sliding, blade size, etc. Perhaps a whole separate video? Also, prices on those things seem to start in the $175-$200 range for a basic model and go all the way up to $400-$500 for a professional grade one. Lots of deals online for used ones (CraigsList, LetGo, OfferUp, etc). Any suggestions on what to look for when checking a used one, other than if it turns on/off of course?
