Reid: Hey, I'm Reid. This is Brad. We're talking today about NetApp disk shelves. We get inquiries all that time that someone's got a filer or controller and they're trying to add more capacity but they don't know what disk shelf they should add. There's 4 disk shelves that we typically run into that customers are trying to add. The old, old disk drives are DS14, MK4s, MK2s, but most people have graduated to this newer disk shelf.

The last shelf we're going to talk about is the 4486.

Brad: You've got 48 drives in 4U of space and it supports only SATA drives.

Reid: Got you. How's that different than when we talked about before that had 24 drives and only supported SATA? Is that right?

Brad: You're talking about a different drive type. It's just that shelf's going to be phased out.

Reid: Oh.

Brad: It came first because they didn't have the smaller fast SATA drives at the time. They just had the big boys.

Reid: The new one is more of a small form factor.

Brad: Right.

Reid: SATA drive or NL SAS drive. The old one was just the older large form factor SATA drive.

Brad: Correct.

Reid: Got you. That shelf is the DS4486.

Brad: The new one is the 4486.

Reid: Cool. That gives you a little bit of explanation. There's 4 disk shelves that are out right now. You can use them to upgrade just about every filer out there. Knowing the workload as well as your growth as well as how much room you have in your data center really will dictate which shelf you're going to pick, also the pricing perspective as well. A new disk shelf is typically going to be about 2 or 3 times more expensive as a used disk shelf. Make sure you have a use strategy when you upgrade your filers to get more capacity for less money. Thanks for watching the video.
