This felt so bizarre, even for One Piece, it was horrifyingly brilliant! Oda really said at the start of this arc “you know how I don’t usually kill characters, let’s start off with destroying a Nation today!”

This is actually more terrifying than it was in the manga.
Bc when Lulusia was wiped out in the manga it was a single beam of light and then it was gone.
This is much more terrifying.
The manga makes it look like the people died without even knowing what happened. It was essentially a painless death where the last thing they saw was a bright light and then POOF gone.

This is much more terrifying. Those people died in terror, agony, panic, despair.

Yes one piece always more colorful and the vibe itself kinda happy.. But Its stories in each arcs definitely more traumatic and dark compared to other shounens

The worst part is that the attack was never intended for Sabo; it was merely a test. Imu could have chosen any other island, but he specifically targeted Lulusia and wiped out its population simply because it was nearby. This shows how evil he is. casually eliminating an entire population without needing a valid reason.
