Sewing A Party Dress From A Vintage Reproduction Sewing Pattern

My latest sewing project, is another beginner friendly sewing project.
In this one I sew an easy to sew dress , a 1960s style party dress for New Years Eve. I sew this dress using a vintage reproduction sewing pattern that is a copy of an original 1960s sewing pattern. The Sewing Pattern used is Butterick 6318 you can find the sewing pattern here

This is approved as a sewing pattern for beginners and was so much fun to sew. It is a simple gathered skirt dress, if you know how to sew in a straight line and how to install a zipper you can sew this dress!

I loved the final Outcome of this dress but the waist is a little long and a few fit issues in the bust but overall it was a great sewing pattern and I hope you enjoy watching me sew this dress.

Next time you work in brocade, zig zag your edges before sewing. This will help the fraying. Your dress turned out beautiful! Happy New Year 🎉🎉

Beautiful dress; I love your fabric choice.. As sewists, we 'see' our flaws however, most people simply see a classy dress on a gorgeous lady. Wear your dress with pride ✂️ 👗 ❤️ 🇬🇧

I enjoy your tutorials. I like the way you accept your mistakes and keep going. It happened to me so many times even though I being sewing for more than 40 years. 😂 I feel motivate it by you. Thanks 😊

Very beautiful! And any fit issues aren't noticeable in the style of the dress. One piece sleeves are more forgiving and with a sash that ties it's going to be tight in the right places. You always do a great job and have lots of skill.
And remember the fit adjustments you need aren't bad things. Being short waisted means that you have long legs. And needing a full bust adjustment means you have a tiny waist and shoulder width. Out of all the fit issues to have being long legged for your height and tiny waisted aren't so bad 😉
Also glad to see the kiddos feeling better!

Love your enthusiasm and really incredible journey as a sewist. This turned out beautifully and then you made the best choice ever: hanging with the family on NYE!!! I've NEVER regretted partying with just my husband on NYE. I get to do that whenever I want. How wonderful to know that you have a Valentine's Dress ready to go or even better, a 'Tuesday night dinner dress" at the ready!! Or even a "Hanging with my Bestie" (or by myself) dress at the ready!!! Not sure if you're familiar with "Anita By Design"? She has a channel dedicated to beginning sewists, but as a lifelong sewist, I enjoy going back and checking in (building on) my sewing skills. Information comes from ALL sources and revisiting the "beginner sewist of 2023" and learning about ALL of the advances made since I started sewing keeps it all fresh and real. I love learning about so many new advancements that have placed "beginning sewists' down the path of experience. I love being taught from everyone. I am such a better sewist!! Thank you to all who put it out there during COVID and more. Your generosity has made all the difference for me and my confidence (as a sewist and as a person). So grateful that you shared your knowledge.

I have fabric for 4 projects. Mostly 1920s and 1930s but one 1940s dress. So I am really excited to try and get them done this year.

I currently have the pieces cut out for a 1930s pants, backless shirt, and a bolero. I have to learn how to make buttonholes because it has 10 buttons. But I have all everything I need already.

That fabric is fantastic and your dress turned out beautifully!!
This was the first vintage pattern I ever made. I used a large blue and white gingham from Joann’s shirting fabrics. I’m also a little short waisted so I took the bodice up I think 1”. The waistline hits at the right spot but I didn’t account for the sash placement so the top hits a little too far up on the sides of the bust haha.

Thanks for this video! I love all of your choices - pattern, fabric, bag, shoes, contrast belt. I totally get the not doing the alterations to get something done. I also tried to make a NYE dress 3 days before and mine was a fight - I didn't test the pattern and the fit was off. I used a grey skirt I had since the 90s and some fabric from my stash. I am still trying to fix it lol. I used the Liberty Fabrics Bertie shift pattern that I will call 1960's "inspired". 2023 goals - finish my upcycle pile to dos, and work through all the fabrics I have bought and stop buying more for a while - except maybe this pattern - it's so pretty, Watching you do that skirt made me think about how I am lately using a lot of hand basting instead of pins to work in gathers before sewing. Can't wait for more videos.

I’ve personally never worked with brocade but you have inspired me with this make. It’s beautiful, well done! ❤

Happy new year! This is Really gorgeous! I’ve been eyeing that pattern for a long time so it’s cool to see what it looks like IRL:) My sewing goals this year are to successfully make a couple different bras (I took a class last year, but it’s hard to get it right!) and I also want to try more pattern drafting/style alterations to replicate some of the vintage styles I don’t have patterns for (so hard to find them in my size!) and also to take it slow! You’re right sewing is a special time we carve our for ourselves-might as well enjoy it:) I’m excited to see whatever you make this year-always enjoyable ❤

Happy New Year! Beautiful dress, your kids are cute 🥰 I also used brocade for my NYE outfit this year, I ended up making a knee length vogue skirt, and a strapless bodice from a pattern I found off Etsy!
