In this video, Dr. Kushner delves into the fascinating realm of psychoanalytic theory, exploring the concepts of the id, ego, and superego as proposed by Sigmund Freud.

Special thanks to James W. Anderson, PhD, former President of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Society and a faculty member of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute, for his guidance and consultation in my quest to better understand Freudian psychanalytic theory.

In just 16 minutes, the million dollar questions WHO AM I is explained very well in simple terms and examples using the Freud model. None of the 1000s of other videos in YouTube does what this one does. Thank you very very much Dr.Kushner.

A resume:

The iceberg Methaphor:
Freuds likens the mind to an iceberg, where the conscious mind (above water) is only a small part of our mental life. The larger part, the unconscious mind (below water), profoundly influences our behavior without our awareness.

* Conscious mind:
* Contains thoughts, memories, desires and feelings we are aware of.
* Represents everything we are currently thinking about.
* Unconscious mind:
* Contains repressed thoughts, traumatic memories, and socially unacceptable desires.
* These hidden aspects shape our behavior and emotional responses.

Freud’s structural model:
The mind consists of three parts: Id, Ego and Superego, which interact to shape our personality and behavior.

ID
* Entirely in the unconscious mind
* Present from birth and driven by primal instincts and desires.
* Operates on the pleasure principle, seeking intermediate gratification of needs and desires.
* Driven by life instincts (Eros) for survival and reproduction, and death instincts (Thanatos) for self-destructive behaviors.

EGO
* Mediates between the Id and reality
* Operates on the Reality Principle, considering the consequences of actions.
* Floats between the conscious and unconscious mind.
* Uses defense mechanisms like repression to manage the demands of the Id.

SUPEREGO
* Develops around the age of five
* Represents internalized societal standards and moral values
* Acts as as judge, enforcing the moral principle.
* Creates an ideal self, an unattainable standard leading to feelings of guilt and shame when not meet.

Defense Mechanisms:
The ego employs various defense mechanisms to manage the anxiety caused by the conflicting demands of the Id and Superego. One key defense mechanism is repression, where uncomfortable thoughts and desires are pushed into the unconscious.

Freudian Slips:
 Sometimes repressed thoughts and desires can surface through slips of the tongue, dreams, or accidental actions. Revealing hidden aspects of our unconscious mind.

The interplay between the Id, Ego and Superego illustrates the ongoing struggle within the mind to balance primal desires, reality and moral standards. This understanding can offer insights into the development of personality and the roots of mental illness.

I hate how my super-ego expectation has fuelled my inner voice which has become a critic which is somehow so similar to how my mom thinks and used to direct me. its harsh.
