This is amazing!! the storytelling and expressions come off spectacular!
From what I understand, Heather has always had a fascination with sea stories, specifically about mermaids. As she gets older, she begins to lose her youth and beauty and/or she has a disease that will kill her young. She turns to science to find a cure with the help of the crew mate but spirals when there's no success, becoming psychotic and even doing tests on herself. When the crew mate gets hurt and walks out, Heather realizes that their blood and any mermaid-like creature's blood has rejuvenating abilities.
This leads her to using it on herself and becoming young, healthy and beautiful again. She makes bank selling the blood to other upper class people who share her desire to stay young and beautiful. She and Charles hunt and harvest mermaids for their blood, likely justifying that they are all monsters. Behind her back, the upper class judge her whether it be for her dirty work, being a woman of science, using the blood to stay young, her facial scar, or all of the above.
However, Mariza, even in their new form, remembers what heather did to her girlfriend and sees the damage she is causing to the sea. She begins haunting Heather in her dreams, giving her nightmares and making her anxious. At the end right before Heather goes out on another expedition, Mariza decides to pay Heather a visit to give her some karma.

Okay, here’s my interpretation:
Heather grew up fascinated with mermaids, in a pretty well-off family. At some point, she met Willow (jellyfish mermaid, the one appearing at the lyrics “how do I meet the strangest men” — for the new people, she’s part of Delta’s crew as seen in the google slides) and they became very close, but something happened — my guess is that she found out she was a mermaid — and either Heather attacked her or she hurt herself. This led to Heather discovering mermaid blood (the part where she picks up the shard with blood on it) and beginning to hunt mermaids thanks to how valuable their blood is. Cut to Delta’s childhood, where she encountered Heather after discovering her ‘lair’ (I believe the monstrous looking mermaid is like that because of blood loss, since we’ve seen Delta’s mermaid form before and it didn’t look so creepy), which foreshadows Delta’s own capture and then shows us a scene from it where Mariza saves her. Willow is either still in contact with Heather and is her ally (hence the turning away from the rest of the crew), or is simply remembering her bad past with her and seeking revenge. Meanwhile, Mariza is using her newfound god powers to make Heather guilty for what she’s done (you can see her signature glowing cyan in the background of the dream sequence) to try and throw her off. At the end, it looks like there’s about to be a confrontation, or Mariza is simply watching/spying on Heather.

Beautiful animatic as always and it’s super fun to interpret with the lore we’ve already been given!

not often an animatic makes you rethink your interpretation of the song!! i've heard this audio many times but never really thought about "now only dogs will follow me" for long. but like. for this character, her close relationship just failed, so now she's only attracting those who follow her for their own gain -- like dogs clustering around a butcher shop. those drawn to money she may offer, or to the inhumaneness of her work. and they follow her whims only for that end result, not understanding her because she doesn't want them to.

also that framing of hair across the screen was GENIUS

I’m just noticing something… in some shots Heather looks like she looks ‘old’ (like, kinda wrinkly n stuff) but in other shots that seem to be taken at a later time she seems young. And we can see that Delta met Heather when she was a child, and Heather seems to be young there, and is still young now. When she puts some of the persons blood on her face it seems to make her look young again… not to mention the mermaid skeleton from the ‘Dismemberment Song’ seems to be alive during the scenes where Delta is a child (but is now, just a skeleton). And the dude at 0:12 seems to be a younger version of the dude at 1:27 (maybe? I can’t tell). Does mermaid blood… de-age people? It makes sense why she’d be hunting mermaids. I think we even see older people at those parties Heather is attending, and maybe she sells mer-blood to de age people? Explains why she is so rich. Thanks for coming to my theory crafting, just something I noticed. Also, sorry if this sounds wack or hard to understand lmao, my grammar is shit.
