Lana Michelle Moorer, known as M C Lyte, was born on October 11, 1970, in Brooklyn, New York. She is a legend in the hip-hop community and She began rapping when she was twelve years old. With her lyrical prowess and engaging stage presence, she became one of history's most important female rappers. She made her breakthrough in the late 1980s with the album Lyte as a Rock. She is regarded as one of hip hop's original feminists and a genre pioneer. M C Lyte not only broke down barriers as a woman in a male-dominated profession, but she also changed how society viewed female performers in the genre. In 1988, she became the first female rapper to release a solo album. She was the first hip-hop musician to perform at Carnegie Hall, as well as the first female hip-hop artist to receive a gold single and a solo Grammy nomination. She was also the first woman to be inducted into VH-1's Hiphop Honors (2006) and the first to win B E T's "I Am Hip Hop" Icon Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. She was one of Hiphop's first popular recording artists and remains a key character in its history. She continues to record, perform, and DJ, serving as a role model and reminder that a woman rapper does not always need to expose her body in order to express her message.
