SSH access is needed to take full control of your Home Assistant server. With SSH access you can execute bash script command on your Home Assistant server from your Windows or Linux PC or Mac. It makes it possible to install HACS and other custom integrations.

This addon can be installed using supervisor. HACS is not needed to install this add-on. Make sure you have Advanced mode enabled in your profile!

You are a life saver. How many hours would it have taken to work that out without you! Thanks very much.

SHJ great videos, your guidance and time is appreciated. Footnote advanced mode is disabled in add on store now so ssh and terminal will not show up along with a number of other items.

With those with newer versions of HA, to get to the SSH&Web Terminal add on simply go to Settings/Add Ons

To anyone who's struggling with the new UI. Literally, just change your username and add your ssh-key to the array e.g.

authorized_keys: [
add your key here, don't even format it

Hi Guys, I am just starting to get into the rabbit hole of Home assistant and have just watched this awesome video.
On my install though, i cannot see a section for creating a username within the config section?

GREAT video! Perhaps modify the video to explain how to use WinSCP to move files onto HA? I was able to figure it out, because your instructions were perfect re: SSH, configurations, and password setup. I am NOT a strong Linux user, so this would be more helpful.

Hey Ed, thanks for the video - I kinda struggle to make it work though - I have set the password and the ssh key but when accesing the ssh via cmd after I type yes enter (7:25 of your video) it asks me to insert password but it always deny acces - I did try copy the password or type. Still the problem occurs. Any ideas? Thanks

Thanks, works like a charm on my Apple.. Did you ever had any problems with updating HA. It ruined 2 SD cards and had to install 2 times in my HA career -:).

I had an issue where the line for the SSH key wasn't accepted by the configuration window, and reverted back to default settings when I pressed Save. I am new to this, but fixed it by not removing the brackets which are in the code by default, pasting the line in between. It automatically took the format like presented in the video, and therefore turned out to be a formatting issue

Great! Thanks for this sharing. Question: can I use this way to install mpd and have a ´simple’ Bluetooth speaker connected?

Why SSH & Web Terminal as opposed to Terminal & SSH? The security rating of the one you recommended is "1" (lowest) vs the "official" add-on version which they give a "6" security rating (highest).

Not at all sure what wrong with mine but it will not connect! error log saying Logging in with a SSH password is security wise, a bad idea!
[16:28:49] WARNING: Please, consider using a public/private key pair. It keeps saying my user name and password are incorrect too! they are 100% correct so no clue whats up with this computer! Gave me days to setup on Githn with these SSH but managed to do it eventually bit now I think both will be messed up! Big thanks to your help on this video, after a few hours of messin with settings and things I managed to get it connected to it not fully sure how but its worked! 🙃😁👋👋👋👍

Thank you for this video. I did have SSH installed but it was the 'official' one with the web terminal. I much prefer the one you installed so can access it via my bash terminal. However, I find with the Raspberry Pi image install that the majority of changes I have tried to make, in the past, are volatile. Once the Pi reboots they are no longer there For example I have installed crontab -e changes and they had disappeared.
