For a long time I thought that Corey had a vocal trauma that prevented him from screaming the way he did before, but it turned out that he intentionally tried to take his screams to a higher pitch (Vol. 3 was higher than Iowa and 9.0 and a Stone Sour album recorded at that time were the highest).
I never liked the 9.0 live album for that reason, but 15 years later it started to hit different, he's so obviously trying to scream his lungs and throat out that I feel bad for not seeing this at the time—Corey was probably going through enormous amounts of pain both emotionally and physically (he was going through a lot of stuff: raising a kid while being on the road and in the studio, trying to keep his marriage from falling apart, quitting alcohol, and then going through a divorce).
It took me 15 years to start appreciating this live album and almost 20 years to finally “get it”—after I started screaming in Corey's style and felt that the more emotional pain there is inside of you, the more you want to scream your soul out.
