Hi, I'm AfroCaribbean and now aged 61. I used to ALWAYS do this for contour in the 1980's. Exactly the same thing. I didn't need the brown because my skin was already brown. I did this because I couldn't afford the only make up we had for black skin; which was Fashion Fair. It was extremely expensive and only the rich could afford it, so I had to make do. I am surprised to see this method has only now been discovered. 🥴

Budget makeup is lipstick for lips, eyes, blush and brown-black eyepencil for eyes(beautiful when it deepens alongside lipstick color), brows, countour, and even can be used to darken the lip color/lip countour.
Bonus if you have a highlighter or those light cream eye pencil/eyeshadow cream thing, you can even mix that to the lipstick to lighten it up. Then maybe a gloss?

If you have ok skin (or even acne skin its alright) then no need for foundation. Alot of people just need some color to their face and to darken/highlight their features. Unless your face is full of color then yeah

In conclusion its a colored product and if it works then it works. Though the consistency and the waterproof/smudgeproof qualities or the lack of it may not be intended for the part where you apply it. It wont be a full face or any glamorous makeup but hey-budget makeup is budget makeup.

Just use a cool tone bronzer. Cool toned bronzers are going to have more like grayish brown tones which look more like a shadow versus the orange-golden brown tones of a regular bronzer

Used to do this as a broke college student because bronzers and contour palettes are expensive but eyebrow pencils and eyeliners are way cheaper!

Use a dark brown with a heavy grey undertone works like a charm.

Exactly! I am the same. I have been using black eye pencil for decades to contour. Even up to today. That's because I have very dark brown skin and anything brown just blended into my skin tone and you couldn't see it.

Another decades long hack, that only just caught on a few years back was using lipstick as a blusher.
