I'm so glad I went to school at a time when we learned to read books by reading books and not from textbook excerpts or grammar drills. I'm positive I would have never turned into a lifelong pleasure reader if I had to suffer through the type of instruction advocated by this documentary. Notice how content, style, and literariness are always irrelevant to them; phonics and grammar are just two of a variety of skills that need to be mastered on our inevitable path to careers as call center managers

It's frustrating because none of these highly-paid reading consultants themselves became book lovers through memorizing vocabulary lists. They acquired their reading skills by being raised in print rich environments. Yet they think poor kids just aren't that into libraries so they need a wholly different approach

I think the emphasis shouldn't be on literacy as a product of education--supposed "failure". The context should be about literacy in the 21st Century. How are teachers adjusting to 21st Century learning. What skills are needed to bridge the gaps??
