From Season 4, Episode 8. "American Dream" - Stone and Kincaid (Michael Moriarty, Jill Hennessy) investigate further when a businessman (guest star Zeljko Ivanek) is acquitted of murder.

This is the official YouTube channel for Law & Order. Watch all of the official clips from the series, some of the best moments from within the criminal justice system, where the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: The police, who investigate crime, and the district attorneys, who prosecute the offenders.

Season 4, Episode 8. "American Dream" is a classic!!! Ben's line, "In a polite society sir, you never call someone by their first name unless you are asked to." and ..."you sir are NOT a colleague of mine". Great stuff and well portrayed acting by both characters.

God I love Stone’s smile at the end- watching the smug, confident killer Swan finally realize he’d lost- and all that smugness washed away- at that moment, Swan realized he was done. Out of options - and afraid. Stone deserved to see that- his smile was well-earned.
This was a GREAT episode- watching the smug, condescending, ‘superior’ Swan go down was quite satisfying for the viewer as well.

That is how to deal with a sociopath,
1. recognize their efforts/feelings (a lot of effort to be back where you started . even it is with a pinch of salt here) 2. put him in his place (not discussing terms of the deal with him)
3.explain to him why he is out of place (rules in society regarding of calling someone by first name), 4.establish clear boundaries (we are not friends), good show of psychological skills of stone here.

In a polite society sir you don't call people by their 1st name unless they ask you too. An all time great quote.

My favorite episode. One of the most memorable villains in the show's history and arguably Michael Moriarity's best performance.

Zeljko Ivanek is a terrific actor. He can play a good guy or a bad guy tremendously well.

"Phil Phil Phil... if you had just been satisfied with your acquittal, you could have walked away free and clear. But you just had to get greedy and come after me, didn't you? Well someone once said 'There is no Torrent worse than Greed'. Think about that for the next 25 years."

Great episode: I love the look on Ben's face when Swann says to him "I spent the last 8 years earning the right to call you whatever the hell I want!"

When Ben Stone calls you “sir”, you pretty much better get the priest for your Last Rites.

Never understood how Ben Stone barely moves his mouth but gets a whole paragraph out 1:23

“I can call you whatever the hell I want..”
Stone: Oh really?

This was one of the most slick and narcissistic criminals in the show's history. It was later remade into one of the *_Law and Order: UK_* episodes.

I always knew who he was, but I never knew his name. But I'm so glad I now, what a terrific actor: Zeljko Ivanek.

Funny thing about being polite... When Ben addressed you as 'Sir', you were about to get severely schooled.

If Michael Moriarty stayed with Law & Order in time for the crossovers with Homicide: Life on the Street, he and Zeljko Ivanek (ADA Ed Danvers in Homicide) would have teamed up for the prosecution. It was Sam Waterston who teamed up with Ivanek instead in the crossover stories.
