Fun fact, nukes are usually detonated in the air, rather than on the ground. This is done to increase the force of the explosion, and to reduce fallout by keeping the amount of ground in contact with the fireball minimal, meaning less radioactive dust and dirt poisoning people long after the bomb falls.

Because Thomas reaches the ground before detonating, it actually decreases the initial damage, while increasing fallout. This means that he was made purposefully to be much more cruel and hateful than a regular nuclear bomb.
