This song is not about a jackal. It's about the magician Jackl (Jakob Koller) who lived in the Salzburg area during the late 1600s. His mother Barbara Koller was a renderer and very poor. In 1675 she got caught when she and her son attempted so steal donations to the local church. Jakob, only ten years old at the time, managed to escape into the woods. Barbara Koller was accused of whichcraft and under torture she accused her son of practicing black magic too. Barbara Koller was executed by strangulation and her body was burnt at the stake. Her son Jakob never got caught but he became a legend as the magician Jackl. It was told that he was the leader of a gang of homeless kids and taught them black magic. Alot of poor boys from the area got accused of being members of the gang of the magician Jackl. They confessed under torture and got executed and burnt. 139 in total. That's what this song is about.
The truth is that the authorities used the belief in witchcraft to legally get rid of the vast number of child beggars after the Thirty Years' War.
