She Was Buried Alive 😳

Octavia Hatcher was a woman from Pikeville, Kentucky, who passed away in 1891. Horrifically she was mistakenly buried alive. After her apparent death, she was interred in a family mausoleum, but a few days later, when her husband visited the mausoleum, he heard noises coming from her coffin. Octavia's body was exhumed, and it was discovered that she had been struggling and trying to escape her premature burial. Unfortunately, she died shortly after being freed from the coffin. This incident is often cited as an example of the fear of being buried alive and led to the invention of various safety measures, such as devices to signal if someone was mistakenly buried.
