I figured out the fastest way to grow grass from seed and it amazed me
I killed off a section of grass to test out different methods on how to grow a new lawn from seed. We covered some of the seeds with
Plastering sand / sharp sand
Peat free compost
High-quality topsoil topdressing mix
A section with no covering
Lastly, we covered all the sections in horticultural fleece.

This project was filmed for 30 days timelapse. To try and ascertain what is the best product to grow grass seed in. It was a big project to undertake, with huge amounts of footage to record and edit. I would like to thank my Dad Chris for helping me out, he didn't do too bad for someone that is 77!

This is the best grass experiment vid I've ever seen! Thanks for doing this, it's inspiring me to try new things rather than getting frustrated w/ bad results

2 years on this has been a very useful trial which you have videoed. Many thanks, Robbie.

Thanks for this Robbie. Lawn care videos can often feel like a bunch of people just repeating each other so a proper experiment followed through to a result is very refreshing and interesting. Fair play!

very helpful to have the experimental approach and to show us in this vid. Thanks!

This was a great experiment! As someone doing my own lawn, overseeing and growing a new one this has been really helpful. Thanks.

I just started working on my small side yard, right next to forest land, and it probably hasn't been touched except with a mower since the beginning of time. It's a savage patch of clover, moss, broad leaf grass, ruts, holes, pieces of rocks and glass that washed down the hill behind my house. Apparently there was a homestead up there in the early 20th century and they just threw their garbage into a ravine which flows down into my yard when it rains hard.

I've started out by mowing, using a blower and carefully hand-picking any debris out of my yard. That said, I'll never get it all. I've started out by taking a garden weasel to my bare spots and then covering those with a nice seed product that has fertilizer and mulch powder in it that expands quite a bit when watered. I didn't have any problem with seeds being washed away, eaten by birds or germinating. I'm doing a few bare spots at a time and learning from how it goes.

The next step I'm taking is to use an herbicide to kill off the clover and broad leaf grasses. I'm doing it in patches instead of bombarding my whole yard at one time. After the weeds are killed and the herbicide has had 14 days to leech out I'll hit those spots with the garden weasel and seed mix like I did the bare spots. After I have the main section I'm working on all seeded and the grass is growing, then I'll start top dressing.

Since I'm on a hillside there is a slope to my yard. I'm going to make this section I'm working on very flat and with little slope so that'll take a bit of soil. I'll be using a mix with soil and sand that's rated well for top dressing. After I have the turf flat, weed free and looking pretty good I'll finish it with a top dressing of fine sand to just make the ground softer and to help grind up any mulch going forward. All this will also serve to permanently bury the little pieces of glass, etc.

I thought the compost would of been better than the topsoil for sure 👍 top soil looked better than all to me, everyday is a learning day

Well done. Thanks for the subtitles (Im USA and it's hard to understand your speech). Great comparisons! My problem is squirrels. They go wild digging up the bed. The lady next door planted a lot of trees (drawing squirrels). Don't know whether it's the ground tilling/soil loosening or what that draws them. Tarp works! Even once the seeds grow they continue to ransack the new bed.

I just reseeded quite a bit of my lawn after a major renovation. Looks like I did pretty good according to this video. I didn't double seed like you did. I basically spreaded seed on, put a 1/4" or so of compost on top, then do a gentle rake and called it good. Interesting that I could have put more seed on top of that if I wanted to. I planted TTTF, and it's day 8 and I can already see some shoots in some areas. These areas happen to be the warmest areas. The north and east areas no shoots yet, but probably soon! Pretty cool results. Basically, covering with anything (within reason) is 100% better than not covering at all. Also, interesting that the fleece cover may get grass started faster, but within 30 days the un-fleeced will catch up just the same. To note: I used compost because I had quite a bit left, and I had already leveled my lawn so compost for me was the right thing to use vs spreading more topsoil on. In otherwords, in my case I wanted the material to break down. One thing I am doing in addition to what you did, is put starter fertilizer down probably at around the 14 day mark when I start seeing enough shoots.

I wanted to make my own rolls of turf for my garden so I did a test and grew various long trays of grass using the same seed on all, tray 1 compost, 2nd tray soil taken from the garden and tray 3 topsoil with a sand blend, i found growing seed in the compost was the best with in 1 week i went from seeds to 2 inchs of nice dark green grass i was amazed it grew so fast in the compost and the roots were very long i kept the trays in the conservatory all week and lightly watered them every day.

It would be interesting to see you grow a patch with different sorts of seeds, to see the difference between cheap and more premium etc

Honestly... The best way to grow grass from seeds is to look at your videos !
I have totally repaired a heavily damaged grass under an apple tree without knowing anything an starting from beginning just by looking your channel Sir ! And following your last recommendation, I have bought a 40V battery leaf blower to save me time and effort with dead leaves 👍

Thank you! I have two weddings (my 2 eldest daughters) this summer and I need to do my lawns so badly! My issue is Japanese knotweed, moss, and ground squirrels! Also chickens but I’m going to try and contain them.
Have you ever made a large area where you made your own sod? Im debating that. Just marking off a flat area, laying down tarp, mixing bags of potting soil, mulch, sand and and perlite and then laying a thin layer over the tarp, laying bird netting over that and then another thin layer of the mixture- then sprinkling the grass seed on top and watering in. Then I debated putting a visqueen cover over that to further deter birds. After a good month cutting it into strips, preparing my area and then rolling it out to there 😂

Great little test mate, just shows, stick something down that’s going to help protect the seed and keep it wet and your off to a winner 🙌🏽

Absolutely loving this Channel so far, learning a lot from just the few videos I've seen. I love it that it's in Ireland too (they can have all the seasons in one day) and it's a true before and after with the different weathers!

Very helpful experiment and confirms the advice given by Daniel Hibbert which set me off on the fleece method, it just gives the grass a protected period to start germinating without the birds getting overweight ! The fleece material is cost effective, use it, swill it out and put on the washing line to dry and then it is ready to be re used.

I tried pregermination and it worked wonders! The seed grew in about a week .
