Not every class 1 railroad in the US likes steam. There are three "C" railroads in the US and Canada that hate steam now. CSX, CN, and CP. CP had a steam program but their new boss E. Hunter Harrison stated he hates steam, he came from CN. BNSF allows steam on a case by case basis and only with approved locomotives and equipment, and NS has a new program with its partners Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, and Virginia Museum of Transportation. Sadly no UP steam operated last year or this year. But there will be plenty of NS excursions next year with 765, 4501, and 611. Only negative of class 1 steam now is no open window policy.

time 3:56 is that Wood River, NE? I remember chasing the Shiloh Limited from Kearney to Grand Island that day. Makes for a great family trip chasing her, 3985 and soon 4014.

I've found myself wondering what the high pitched whistle on this loco is? It sounds like a turbocharger.

Pretty good video. Loved seeing Shelton, NE. I grew up in the town of Wood River which is the next town east of there. I retire this year from the military and will be moving back to Wood River, so hopefully one day i get to see 844 in person. Wood River is getting an overpass which should make for some exciting rail fan videos.

WWII, EJ&E was 440 yds across the frozen fields from the farm house, Northwestern was over a mile. Below zero winter nights, tucked away up in my loft, that sound was comforting, as the freight for war time, roared past. Nights passed quickly as the rhythmic 'click clack' and clank of the iron lulled me to sleep. Dreams of what lay away to the west over the horizon and into my future, are now but memories restored by this vid, good post.

Excellent video, moody in the mist to start with, then brilliant sunshine as 844 tells everybody "get out of the way I'm coming through!" And the doppler effect from the whistle as she goes past and away - superb!! There's no mistaking who's the "bad mutha" of the 4-8-4s!!
Thanks for sharing a wonderful moment in time!
