Hi Cheere, I am so enjoying this book about the Mountbatten. Fascinating couple. Back in the 1965, Dickie was appointed the last Governor of the Isle of Wight UK, where I now live. He was revered and although he did not live here permanently, he visited frequently people flocked to see him. His popularity had a lot to do with his charm. I knew a photographer whose job it was to cover his visits. Dickie made sure he gave him plenty of photo opportunities and addressed him by his first name, Roger. By this time Lord Louis was in his 70s, but still a handsome man and quite conscious of his image. Roger once told me that Dickie was beginning to stoop at the time. Whenever a significant photo of him on his own, as was often the case, was about to be taken, he would stand with his back to the wall and ask the ADC who always accompanied him to push his shoulders back to reduce his slight stoop. Vain till the end, huh? I thought you would enjoy this little character portrait.
His bronze bust in the main square in Newport, capital of the Isle of Wight was unveiled by the then Prince of Wales in the 80s.

I think when he was talking about his success for Patricia he meant when he got Earldom and made sure it can passed down to his eldest daughter( which was very unusual) and Patricia became 2nd countess mountbatten of Burma.

Patricia's concern about entering into marriage and not wanting to go in with the idea that they'd divorce if it didn't work out already shows so much more maturity than her own parents had.

Sounds like Dickie was drinking when he wrote the letter. Reminds me of a drunk dialing at midnight.

Both Dickie and Edwina were sick puppies. There is something to be said for having 90% of ones time taken up with earning, keeping a roof overhead and a chicken in the pot.... the idle rich have too much time on their hands - time to get into mischief and

I was a child when Lord Mountbatten was killed. I remember it being world news. So interesting to hear their story. Thank you Cheere Denise.

It would have been hard to love Edwina. She demanded adoration but was unable return even basic affection. If it wasn’t about her, she wasn’t interested.

I’m thrilled to see some more on the Mountbattens. I’ve suffered serious withdrawal since the last! Love from London 🇬🇧

I doubt Dickie cared about the boundaries of nicknames regarding the use of Lilibet.
However some of her close friends used it, some still alive when Philip died, hence the late Queen saying she didnt want to hear the name again.

Dickie became more close to Pamela after Patricia married but Patricia remained his favorite child.

Knowing there are rumours about... boys... adds to the revulsion 😢

IMO - Lord Louis was deeply in love with Edwina. She did not reciprocate . That had to be difficult for him, a manly man & perfectionist . I believe the problems in their marriage began with the wife, leaving him little choice in the matter.

Thank you! Have you seen the interview of Andrew Lownie on The Vintage Read Show? I bet if you could do it, it'd be very interesting too.❤❤❤
