The Last Akikiki of Waialae

This is Abby ("A"luminum-"B"lue-"B"lack-"Y"ellow). She is less than 4 months old, and one of the only Akikiki to fledge in 2021. The part of Kauai where she is from -- once thought to be the final stronghold for the species -- has suffered a 95% drop in breeding birds in the past two (2!!!!!) years. There may be only a few dozen Akikiki left in the wild, and it seems possible they will all be gone in a year or two. This is what extinction looks like.

Nice footage. I've never heard of this species before... Very sad that they're so close to extinction...

I'm from New Zealand and it's really depressing how two places so similar (at least in terms of early conservation history, with first peoples and then British colonisation), can become so different :(, hopefully Hawa'ii can curb the Akikiki and it's other endemics from becoming yet another note on a tombstone but it's really depressing :((

How incredibly sad and how incredibly typical of short sighted Homo idioticus. My first CD (2001) is titled "Aluminum Green" and the title track is from the perspective of the last remaining Dusky Seaside Sparrow. I fear not enough of us will wake up in time to stop this ongoing holocenic mass extinction.
