Subatomic particles are the fundamental constituents of matter that exist within atoms. The three main types are protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons carry a positive electric charge and are located in the nucleus of an atom, while neutrons are electrically neutral and also reside in the nucleus. Electrons, on the other hand, are negatively charged and orbit the nucleus in specific energy levels or shells. They determine the chemical properties and bonding behavior of atoms. Protons and neutrons have approximately the same mass, whereas electrons are significantly lighter. Subatomic particles play a crucial role in determining the structure, behavior, and interactions of matter at the atomic and molecular levels, forming the basis of our understanding of physics and chemistry.
