President elect Joe Biden made democracy one of the centrepieces of his foreign policy platform in the run up to the US election, promising that under his watch the United States would once again lead “by the power of our example” and put strengthening democracy “back on the global agenda”. Biden’s call comes at a time when democracy is under pressure world-wide.

Join our host Bridi Rice from the Australian Council for International Development along with the distinguished Carnegie Endowment for International Peace scholar Thomas Carothers and the Australian National University’s Southeast Asia expert Dr Marcus Mietzner as we discuss Joe Biden’s democracy agenda, the causes of democratic regression and illiberalism in Asia, and explore the possibility of a revitalised agenda for democracy promotion at a time of global economic recession and sharpening major power competition.
