Simplifying Safety

Safety on our roads is more important than ever. In a year where traffic-related deaths are at a 16 year high in the United States and Vision Zero policies are failing, we need to re-evaluate how we design our roads to protect vulnerable users and transform our roads at a faster rate if we are to meet safety and climate goals.
In this month's Mobycon Academy we discuss two different approaches to designing safer streets. Zach Vanderkooy introduces the North American perspective and contextualizes some of the key movements and opportunities. He gives us five reasons why we should be optimistic for safer streets in the US. Eveline de Jong summarizes the history of Sustainable Safety in the Netherlands, focusing on the different movements that led to the adoption of Sustainable Safety in the 1980s, and how it has evolved and been applied in practice since then. Lennart Nout leads a discussion comparing with Zach and Eveline, where they compare the two approaches and ask questions on the communication and transferability of them and what comes next. Join us in this important Mobycon Academy session and reach out to us for your safe street questions
