Learn Milky Way Photography in 5 Minutes!

In this video I teach a very basic tutorial on how to photograph the milky way. I talk about the type of gear needed, how to plan milky way photography, where to find the milky way, and camera settings to photograph the milky way.

Here is the formula for shutter speed:
Full Frame Cameras:
500/focal length
Ex: 15mm - 500/15= 30 second shutter speed

Crop Sensor Formula:
500/(1.5 x focal length)
EX: 11mm x 1.5= 17mm
500/17=29.4 or 30 seconds

Where: Use dark sky finder app to find the correct spot
When: Moonless clear nights
Direction: Early in summer SE, later face SW
What time: Photo pills app to check timing for the milkiway to be right above your shot
Focus: Using one of 2 ways:
In day time focus on something really far and mark the focus ring (do not move camera between day and night)
Focus at night to the brightest star and make it sharp (as small as possible)
Settings:
Aperture: open all the way
Shutter speed: 500 / focal length (multiply FL by 1.5 for crop sensor cameras)
ISO: start with 2000 and adjust if required

That's a tiny part ( several billion'th part)of milky way band. Imagine how big the galaxy is.
Guys don't even think you can take a whole picture of Milky way.

For those who follow the Order of Operations, the crop sensor formula (as written) for an 18 mm lens works out to 6000 seconds.

It should be 500/(1.5 * focal length), which would be a more realistic 18.5 seconds.
