I actually just got a i7 4930k, 32GB ddr3, and a Asus x79 Deluxe for free and I am throwing my old 2070 in it. I just need a case and I have a perfect budget PC for my wife

Good advice just don't forget that most office PCs use proprietary power connectors (not universal), so it will not be future proof and it will need for sure adaptors to connect to any hardware that isn't already included!

As an i5-2500 owner, I can relate. Intel i-series only started getting better from the 8th gen. The i7-8700 is a nice upgrade, buy second hand.

I jumped directly to i5 12400. Nice system. ❤❤

Learned this the hard way
Spent three years with an old DDR2 system and when it couldn't be upgraded any further I spent money on a used DDR3 motherboard that could still support my intel Core2Quad processor
When the mobo showed up broken, I snapped it in half over my knee and went to my local electronics store and bought a B450M and started over
Saved up money every month for 8 months before it was an actuall running rig, but man was it worth it

i recently jumped from a i7 2600k to a ryzen 7 5700x and my lord am i regretting not doing this earlier
now just gotta upgrade out of my harddrive and I'm good for the next few years hopefully
(and before i get flamed, it's my gpu that can now enjoy not being bottlenecked because it's a rx 6600)

I currently daily an x99 build i put together at the beginning of the year. I have a couple AM4 builds, but theres just something about reviving older tech and using it after its been abandoned by most.

I also just bought a 12 year old laptop that I'm spending way too much money on. I just always wanted a lenovo t440p, with dedicated GPU, though. I even found a brand new OEM dock for it!

I wouldnt recommend doing this for people just getting into computers and laptops, but I'm addicted to it. I have dozens of PCs and laptops, the vast majority are around a decade old, with one PC thats 2 decades old.

A good path tends to be buying a solid dell PC as a base, then upgrading your way to what you need, regardless of what the long term goals are. As long as you can get an OEM dell system with DDR4 compatibility, you can upgrade your RAM, storage and graphics in a way that's independent of the chip and mobo. Depending on the base you choose the OEM chip/mobo combo tends to be at minimum sufferable, but this way if you eventually decide you need a better mobo/chip combo all you need to do is replace those two components with applicable upgrades, and the crap you already bought will work with your new chip/mobo combo (most likely). However, if you start with a base that's too old (i.e., uses DDR3 technology) you would have to upgrade more components at once to keep them all in sync technologically, which of course will cost more. The idea is to find a base system that allows you to carry upgrades forward the most, while having to pay the least to start the process. It's not as hard as it sounds, but it's also not as easy as it used to be. The market is starting to realize how useful old Dell stuff can be

The answer to the question though would be LGA1151 specifically 200 series motherboards like z270 b250 etc

Lol I actually did that same upgrade from i5-2500K to i5-6700K… about EIGHT YEARS AGO!
That said, I haven’t built a new gaming PC since and I can still play almost any game on reasonable settings

someone should really look into creating a side panel that has either plexiglass or tempered glass for those OptiPlexs

Eh, the oem business desktops aren't always the best idea. I once got one with a proprietary mobo and a psu, which could not be upgraded to a different, atx one, while the psu didn't have the 6-pin needed for the gpu, so I couldn't use the graphics card in it, at all.

Is an i710700 still worth getting for a budget pc build
