Samsun is one of the thirty provinces of Turkey with metropolitan status. It is located in the Central Black Sea Region in the Black Sea Region, at a central point in the northernmost part of Turkey's geography. Samsun, which has seventeen districts and 1,247 neighborhoods, is the region's highest and Turkey's sixteenth most populated province with a population of 1,371,274. It is surrounded by Ordu in the east, Tokat and Amasya in the south, Çorum and Sinop in the west, and the Black Sea in the north. Samsun, which is the most developed city of the Black Sea Region in terms of education, health, industry, trade, transportation and economy, is one of the first priority regions for development.
The oldest known people in Samsun, whose settlement history dates back to 60,000 BC, are the Kaşkas who lived here until the 12th century BC. The city, which lived in the Hittite period after the Kashkas, changed hands several times between 1182 BC and 546 BC, and then came under Persian domination. After the Persians, Samsun, which was dominated by Macedonia, Pontus, Rome, and Byzantium, became a Genoese colony after that. In this period, the city, which was besieged by the Danishmend Principality, could not be taken and a new city known as "Muslim Samsun" was established right next to the city. Until the reign of Mehmed I, the two cities of Samsun continued to exist, and in this period, both cities were joined to the lands of the Ottoman State and united. Samsun, which was captured by Kubadoğulları between 1422 and 1428, remained under Ottoman rule until the proclamation of the Turkish Republic in 1923. Samsun, which has a special position as it is the starting point of the process that started with Mustafa Kemal's departure to Samsun on 19 May 1919, which dates back to the establishment of Turkey, hosts the 19 May Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. Accordingly, it is introduced with the slogan "The City Where the Sun Rises", which has an official nature, and Samsun 19 May March is the official anthem of Samsun. On the other hand, it is also known as the "Capital of the Black Sea" and "Atatürk's City".
45% of Samsun's geography, which is established on an area of 9.725 km², consists of mountains, 37% of plateaus and 18% of plains, with the highest point of Akdağ at 2.062 m. Towards the inner parts of the province, where the typical Black Sea climate is seen on the coastline, the continental climate gains weight and the average annual temperature is 14.5 °C. In terms of water availability, especially Kızılırmak and Yeşilırmak are important rivers and they provide the continuation of intensive agricultural activities with the deltas they form.
Although 47% of the lands of the province, whose economy was based on agriculture and animal husbandry in the first years of the Republic, are still used for agricultural purposes, today's economic activity is largely based on trade and industry, and the weight of agriculture and animal husbandry is gradually decreasing. Samsun, which connects the Black Sea Region to the Central Anatolia Region and the Eastern Anatolia Region by highways, is also a port city and a logistics point with its wide hinterland. Public and private sector investments in Samsun and its surroundings have encouraged population migration from other provinces over time, and the population has increased by 394% since the first census of the republican period in 1927. In Samsun, which has a complex folkloric structure due to the migrations it has received, this structure is felt in areas related to folk culture such as language, folk dance and food. The city is politically conservative and predominantly votes for right-wing parties.
Transportation to Samsun, which is possible by sea, air and road, can be provided from seven provinces on the Samsun-Kalın railway. Apart from the sea route, which is generally used for commercial purposes and road transfer, the province, which has a developed road network, is connected to all of Turkey and Europe by four different state roads. In air transport, direct flights are carried out periodically to eight cities in Germany, Austria and Kuwait, in addition to Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir and Antalya.
