Penny Boards made from wood... I think Jackman at least needs a $.25 board though

Pallet wood Penny Boards! Another thing that the world has never asked for, it's kind of my specialty. Well I had Woodbrew (Dylan and Molly) in my shop a couple of weeks ago and felt like it was my duty to initiate them into the pallet wood lamination process. I had another similar project idea to this but ended up deciding to make Penny Boards instead because I'm currently obsessed with incorporating complicated CNC cuts and patterns as a feature in other handmade pieces. The grid pattern on the top is almost an exact match to the original Penny even with a circle in the center, but featuring my logo instead of the Penny logo. Just for a point of comparison, I ended up carving a board entirely by hand with the Kyle Toth leopard print pattern using a walnut veneer on the top surface of the board. We also made a couple of boards with tails because I wanted to at least make a couple that match the exact shape of the Penny. It's not super practical to make that shape out of wood though just because making the joint strong enough is next to impossible. Finger joints were the strongest, but making a 30 degree finger joint is quite tricky and lining up the pattern on both pieces is even trickier. You'll notice in the video that I attached the 2 pieces together with epoxy, well this was because I needed to cut some slop in the fingers to get the pattern in the top to align. It proved to be quite strong though and made a cool pattern at the finger joints, a win-win!

You continue to have the most pleasant and natural way of bringing your sponsors into your work. It's fun and light, but still really practical and doesn't feel forced. Love your stuff, and happy to support sponsors who are supporting you.

I did have to come back and watch this again. Only to realize being a child of the 60s, and coming up in the 70s... That's all you saw was those back kickers! There were no such things as flat boards. I think that's why this appealed to me so much. I love loved the project. I hadn't seen one of these ever done in solid wood. They were always composite board. What a beautiful skateboard it is!

Paul what you can do with some scraps glue and a steady hand never ceases to amaze me.

We loved how you used the finger joints to make the back part/kicker thingy (we're not skater kids) of the Penny Board, very clever! Breaking down the glue-up must be an 'Old Man' trick (maybe someday, Dylan!). Fantastic editing as always, and great build with the youngsters, Paul!

Great builds Paul, Molly, & Dylan! I really like all the subtle detail; contouring and shaping the boards really takes them to the next level.

Hey @JackmanWorks, just wanted to say I really liked how you did the tail on the skateboard. The best part of my day is when I see a technique that I've never seen before. I can't wait to try to copy this technique on my own. Thanks for all you do. Cheers!

I would not have been able to send the J-Carve version through the table saw to get the angled joint after all that work! Awesome job!

Was not ready for the ' funny ' at the start of the video, damn near spilled coffee on myself. Enjoy watching the videos you create, always a little off the beaten path. Love working with pallet wood and seeing the colors they produce.
