My mum's side of the family is from Slovakia, and I was born there but when I was 4 months old I moved to England. I know a bit of Slovak but I am not fully fluent and I want to be so that whenever I go to Slovakia I can fully understand what people are saying. I practise with my mum sometimes. That is my motivation 😊

Hi Kim, I think the best way to learn a Slavic language as quickly as possible is to learn the basics of grammar, but not get too deeply because it is very difficult (because of declension, seven cases, etc.), and rather get focus on the real conversation with the local people. Your big advantage is that your Slovak husband can help you. Don't worry to speak Slovak, even if you make grammatical mistakes - Slovaks and Czechs will understand you well and you'll get better and better. I know foreigners who came to the Czech Republic and after a year or two they can speak Czech at a very decent level, although of course they probably will never speak as a native speaker. But that isn't important. Important is to understand each other. It's all about the will to learn the language. In the Czech language there is a proverb: "You are human as many times as the number of languages you speak". I wish you good luck with learning Slovak. Regards, Michal.

Ahoj Kim, veľmi dobre tipy. Tiež som sa ta učil cudzie jazyky. Videl som už niekoľko tvojich videiií a sú super. Držím palce, len tak ďalej. Výslovnosť už máš parádnu. P.S.: Filipiny su super. Krásna príroda, more, dobré jedlo, lacno, skvelí pohostinní ľudia a dobrí šachisti :D

Učím sa slovenčinu viac ako jeden a pol roka. Síce často robím gramatické chyby, ale moji slovenskí kamaráti rozumejú čo chcem povedať :) I've never been to Slovakia but I want to improve my Slovak skills so that I can communicate with Slovak people well when I visit there

Hi Kim, where to start...and how to continue? As you have said, you have a slovak husband so my opinion is that thing with personal language tutors is just odd. He is the one who will guide you out of deep waters but you have to swim yourself. What for example helped me was 1. not being in situation where someone can speak for you. Where you have to pass your message on yourself. And also receive. 2. Learn, dont memorize. For example listen a lot to government media news. You dont have to believe them anything at all (this may be often recomended), but one thing you will get guaranteed is proper language, with minimal slang etc. And just get used to phrase things as they do. Try to concentrate on pronunciation, accents, intonation. Dont bother with grammar at all yet. This is how we say it and dont worry why, we just do it. At this stage grammar complicates things and for example misunderstanding at 1:45 is called zvratne zameno sa, which is correctly used by vast majority of slovaks but rarely someone unerstands the politics sorry grammar behind it. Once you will be comfortable in this I call it kitchen level, you will automatically start answering the radio presenter, argue with the newsflash, ... Maybe not loud, maybe just with your inner voice, but that is a clear sign to look into grammar. because you have the habbits already in, m - i mean correct ones as they do it in the news...- and the grammar now will make much more sense. You wont have to learn it, only realize it. My opinion. Someone can have his own, but this worked few times for me and also others. Then you will see what difference is between Jest ranajky a Ranajkovat. If I have something for breakfast what i do really not like, what i would never ever choose but it was the only thing available, then i just eat breakfast. But if i enjoy my whatever breakfast, and i enjoy it so much that i do not want to be disturbed from it i politely answer to ANY question: Ranajkujem.... And mistakes? Do not worry at all. Everyone does them, and that makes life sometimes unexpectedly fun. You are already making a lot of progress, so I wish you a good luck in it, plenty of enjoyment and fun.

Odporucam nalepit papierovy stitok s nazvom na kazdu vec, ktoru mas doma. Lepsie to pomaha vizualizovat a pamatat. Ked budes potrebovat dane slovo, predstavis si v mysli svoju domacnost, vybavi sa ti nejaka asociacia s danym predmetom, a v tom momente si spomenies aj na slovo.
Aj appka je fajn, ale appka je intenzivne ucenie, a mozog potrebuje oddych. Stitky mozog oklamu, a ucis sa aj ked sa neucis ;)

It is very admirable that you are learning our language. Especially since some people which were born here and live here refuse to learn Slovak.
Maybe try to watch something you like and what you know in english and play it in slovak. For example tv show Friends is now on HBO in english and slovak version. Or some other movies, or fairy tales where they don´t speak too much, or talk about complicated things like science, or laws.

Totally agree. Especially with first point - direct translations can feel like Google translate

And u r right.. It's better not to learn grammar for first, it's hard. Vocabulary first 🙂. The best advice

I agree with all of your tips. And there are many more of them. For instance - self-speaking (or shower-speaking :) ), using a monolingual dictionary, plan dialogs in advance (trying to guess or plan what a native speaker is going to say in a specific situation - you can prepare a dialog in the restaurant). Those are all tips when you don't need anyone other to use them, so you can practice them on your own anytime and anywhere. And then you can talk with native speakers in your surroundings, talking online or chatting. How do you learn Slovak, Kim? Do you "have" a teacher - "Máš" učiteľa? :D Or do you skype or chat with somebody?
