Blogs are a useful tool for individuals and businesses alike, yet many people are unclear about how a blog is different from a typical website. So, what is a blog? Ryan Bowman of WebEminence is here to explain how a blog differs from other sites, and why it might be useful for you to start one.

When you’re looking at a typical Web page, it’s static and doesn’t change often. In fact, changing anything on a Web page can be a bit difficult for beginners. On the other hand, a blog is designed for the addition of new content on a regular basis. Rather than having lots of elements, as Ryan points out, a blog will have a single stream of posts with a side column that shows popular posts and other widgets.

Blogs also have plenty of the features you’ve come to expect on a regular Web page, such as social media widgets and navigation links. However, they also contain posts in reverse chronological order. This means the most recent post appears at the top of the page. Typically, the blog will show the headline and first paragraph of the post, and users can click to read more. What is a blog post? Blog are essentially online articles—they integrate text, images, and other media and are usually no longer than 500 words.

Another chief difference between Web pages and blogs, Ryan says, is the ability to comment on a blog post. If you enable the comments section, readers can engage with your posts in a way that typical Web pages simply don’t allow.
