I find it interesting that most of those who criticize the album generally complain that it's too soft, or too many ballads, not "hard enough", etc. To me, what makes DT great is their unique ability to create and blend together so many musical styles. Yes, the story is fantasy, but it's supposed to be. These guys are pure musical genius, and each a virtuoso performer in their own right. They are all in the top 5 in their disciplines - truly world class musicians with the ability to create music on unparalleled levels. If your looking for pure heavy/thrash/speed metal with "Cookie Monster" vocals, you're looking in the wrong place. Don't criticize them for not being what they have never professed to be, but appreciate them for who and what they are... which is almost undefinable, and totally unique. Greatness!

I saw it live last Saturday. Now I want an animated musical film of it. Calling The Astonishing a masterpiece is an understatement and if you miss the live show, you're doing yourself a disservice

If
there's any advice I can offer to fans of DT, casual and otherwise,
it's that we HAVE to let go of our expectations with each new release.
Dream Theater is and has always been a band that defies all expectations
and incorporates a massive palette of influences and ideas. I myself
have struggled with this, as I tend to formulate my own ideas in my head
beforehand of what their new music will sound like, and it never
matches up and I wind up disappointed for a little while, then slowly
let go of my own ideas and grow to love each and every song they put
out.

The entire point of songs like As I Am, Never
Enough, Build Me Up, Break Me Down, and Wither are that DT puts SO much
effort into making their fans happy, but as a fanbase I've never seen
more picky listeners! Since the very first hints of its release, I've
seen every single aspect of The Astonishing get bashed into the ground:
the concept, the way it was marketed, the characters, the lack of
singles leading up to release, the singles they DID put out, the lyrics,
the vocals, the drum sound, the lack of shredding, the shredding they
DID put in, the slower songs, all of it.

I see fans
beg again and again to "bring back the Images and Words/Scenes From a
Memory sound!" every time they start a new album, and I see fans
criticize everything they do for sounding just like past releases. DT
alternates between heavy and dark, and light and atmospheric every two
albums, and both get criticized for being either too technical and
metal, or too light and boring. No matter what they try to do for the
fans, they get ridiculed and bashed and frankly, it breaks my heart.
They love their fans and they get so much hate just for having their own
ideas of what they want their music to be like.

Every
fan has their own favorite DT album because each album is drastically
different and resonates better with certain portions of their fanbase.
But as fans, we HAVE to be accepting when their music isn't quite what
we're looking for, and try our best to appreciate what they do for us.
Please don't let everything be never enough.

I came and watched the concert in Oslo at 28th of February with my day, and it was so awesome! My mother was gonna join too, but she couldn't because she became sick on the same day.
