Many have sung lovely songs to the beautiful roses in Spanish Harlem. This is the original demo recording by Phil Spector. It is among the loveliest of them all.

Best version I have heard...what a shame he was a troubled soul, but then strife fuels genius.

Somewhere out there, there is a fantastic version of Spanish Harlem by a sixties girl group - possibly the Ronettes, but definately with Spector like production - which I heard once back in the 1970s and have never been able to track down since.

I agree. Best version ever of this song.

Pure jewel ! his voice seems to be taylor made for the song. the slower tempo works even better than Ben King version, extremely cool indeed !
does anyone know of other songs/demos performed by Phil himself (besides the Teddy Bears)

If this was played at his trial, perhaps he would never have been convicted. This is a beautiful man. A poet. An artist. Eccentric? Perhaps a little bit. But that does not deny him of his brilliance and the good and joy he has brought to the world.

wonderful post above and by Vienna Woods. Spanish Harlem was his song and his version makes it his own. Everything perfect in it, timing pauses, voice, orchestration. Other great version but not as great as his is Aretha Franklin's. I think he deserves better than a cold prison cell.
