Oscar Peterson is the founding father of 8 hour long chillwave lo-fi Hip Hop videos for Gen Zers to study and smoke to.

I love how great musicians make some "demonstrations", but it's a masterpiece for us hahaha.

what amazes me is no matter the generation, there's always producers breathing huffing n puffing to keep the groove

Forty years ago, Oscar went there -- and we never knew.

Wow! i didn’t know a traditional jazz pianist the caliber of mr peterson had also flerted with synths. He also knew his stuff. The Synclavier was not for everybody.

Never would have imagined Oscar Peterson on a synth. His style seemed so perfected for the acoustic piano. But it makes sense for a true master to adapt and create.

The editing is so great. With the microphone quality it's the kind of thing you would hear in a modern lofi mix the way the beat is interspliced with old footage audio.

Weiird!!! I tried to flip the playing in this video a couple years ago and never got very far with it. You've done pretty much exactly what I had in mind when I tried. So happy to hear this done so well!!! smashed it

Oscar lived near me, like just blocks away in my neighbourhood in the suburbs when I was younger, but I never saw him out and about even to cut his lawn. I knew where he lived but I didn't want to bother him. I knew he had a home studio with lots of gear, I'm a musician so I was into that stuff, I had my own studio also back then, still do now. I really wanted to go see his studio, too bad I never did!

Thank you so much for uploading this! Special glimpse of OP in a very different environment. I knew he dabbled with electronic music but until this point in my life never saw it with my own eyes. There's an element of an old dog teaching himself new tricks!!! He didn't do it by halves though, eh? Look at all the modular stuff going on too... makes you wonder what would Mozart and Beethoven have done if they managed to "Bill and Ted" it into the future for a few weeks....

I love the part where he says he has natural thoughts of what he wants the background to be, I wish I had that kind of talent and thought process

The drum loop is from "Theme from the Planets" by Dexter Wansel. I sampled it on my last record, would recognize it anywhere.

This video means so much to me. I watch it whenever I'm feeling stuck. This video taught me a lot about hearing and feeling different perspectives. He starts out with just exporting a new timbre he's not familiar with, and we get to hear that over and over again until we internalize it, and then we just keeping getting that repeated again. And when he hits the Picasso part he says " I just wish I could make hear things the way he sees things."
Stride pianists are probably some of the most inventive musicians I know. At least the ones from his era, he got to hear Art Tatum endlessly reinvent tunes and explore them. Oscar gets to explore and present a whole new thing, and he does not shy away from it.
It's very valuable for all of us to see how many different ways he can present an idea. I constantly think to myself " how can I get this person to feel this thing the way I see it. Or hear this thing the way I taste it. There's so many ways of experiencing something, and as someone who wants to be an educator that is so valuable for all of us
