This Wasn't Quite What I Planned...Testing Matter!

Aqara sent me a new Hub M2 which has the new updated beta firmware for Matter. In this video, I attempt to connect it to some different ecosystems like Google Home, Amazon Alexa, HomeKit & of course, Home Assistant. Was I successful or is there a lot more to be desired for Matter thus far?

We need more videos like this. Not everything works on the 1st try. I definitely appreciated seeing some of your failures. I found with Eve and even Hue matter betas once you remove and re add a device it works when you just manually enter the code and not scan the QR. hope that works for you.

Just out of pure interest, I've seen suggestions from elsewhere on the internet, that people have had issues commissioning devices on more than one ecosystem - but when they add the dashes to the numbers, things magically started working. Worth a try right?

I love this videos more than you will ever know…. This is an perfect example of what my smart home life is like trying to get stuff working with my Home Assistant install. I feel your pain and I’m so happy it’s not just me.

Yesterday for example I spend 3 hours trying to get the “Bright” app linked to my Smart Meter thinking I could then use the HildeBrand Glow web API to import my energy use into HA without having to buy the HildeBrand Glowstick Zigbee CAD. Nope. So next I’m going to spend probably 6 hours making 2 ESP32/ESPHome hacks to monitor the flashing light on the Gas and Electric then another 12 hours trying to get that working.

Smart home stuff…. It just works 😳

Not nothing at all! Over the course of the last month I set up a whole lot of automation with Zigbee and Home Assistant. At one point I reached the point where I was doubting my choice to go Zigbee, because Matter was "almost there".

This video then confirmed: Don't buy what's promised, but buy what's already there and working. Zigbee is here, and it works. I can share my Zigbee setup over Home Assistant with Google Home, which is enough for me. No doubt that Matter will only get better with time, but I now no longer have that lingering regret for going Zigbee instead of Matter.

Just a notice for you, it showed the HomePod window on the phone, because of the handoff feature of Apple. If you bring an iPhone in the near of a HomePod it shows up. It was just coincidence that you scanned the QR code and it showed up :)

Alexa might not have worked because they did not roll out matter bridge support yet. So devices which expose non matter devices, like the Aqara or Hue bridges are not expected to work with Alexa yet afaik

I just use Home Assistant as my master list of devices (everything connects directly to HA), then I expose HA (entities rather...) to Google and HomeKit. Looking at the state of matter, I guess I won't be getting rid of HA anytime soon... :D

@7:28 did anyone notice the privacy notices, particularly the data sharing? - Some time ago I warned about Matter and what was in it for the big companies supporting it. Well, I think we know now. I remain to be convinced, only once I see Matter working entirely locally will I change my opinion.... Not a fail of a video, quite useful since it yet again demonstrates the incompetence displayed by all the big players when it comes to home IoT. I particularly liked your clown show music in the background... lol
