You seem to be one of the few that recognizes 5G can operate on any of a variety of bands, not just mmWave. My carrier (Rogers in Canada) uses bands between 600 MHz and 3.5 GHz (C band).
As for that altimeter problem, that was apparently only a few older models that had it and was easily fixed by adding a filter.
C band was used long before satellites, for terrestrial microwave links, usually by the phone companies. Years ago, you could see the big towers with the antennas for that. However, they've largely disappeared.
