They used a nuclear generator as a bonfire…

On a snowy day in 2001, three men from Lia, Georgia stumbled across two metal cylinders. The ground was steaming beneath them. It would take the work of over 50 people and two years of intensive hospital treatment before the radiological incident was finally over.

"Look, the point is I'm not cold anymore. And sure, I could choose to think about the fact that I'm warm because I have a decaying radioactive isotope riding right behind me but right now I got bigger problems on my hands" -Mark Watney Space Pirate

As soon as you said "three men..." my heart sunk. So many innocent people hurt by radioactive sources.

It makes me sad that events like this are the reason we won't have more widespread RTGs. It's such a cool power source with the ability to solve so many problems. Imagine a hospital having a near infinite emergency backup generator

On the one hand that's awful.
On the other hand, could I get one of these spicy rock batteries for my home?

It's amazing to me that not a single one of these three guys thought to themselves, "hey it's pretty weird that this giant can is making heat from nothing, maybe we should leave it alone and get the hell away from here"

Took a great lesson at FLETC for a CBP NBC/Weapons of Mass Effects course given by responders to this event

Even if I’m dying of hypothermia, I am not going to huddle up to some weird object that is warm without any visible source of fuel or power… like even if I don’t understand it’s nuclear, something just ain’t right about that. How do people still make mistakes like this? Is it just one of those things I wouldn’t understand since I grew up in a country and time where I was taught these things?

My dads hometown actually has a big river area and a giant hydroelectric dam that you can see from a little swimming spot at a park
( my dad grew up in Roanoke rapids North Carolina it’s really cool and has a pretty big part in early American history)

At first I thought they meant Georgia in the US. I was like yeah sounds like something they’d do. After I learn they were soviets I said the same thing lol
