I'm a retired IRS agent. I can say that if an agent allowed the statute of limitations to lapse in a case where millions of unreported dollars are at state, their career is over. That just isn't done. An agent wouldn't even dream of it. The black mark on your record would be so dark and so persistent that you would never recover professionally.
