My dating philosophy has changed a bit since a divorce with a Thai woman and Charles is new here and just getting a feel for the dating lay of the land here in Thailand. I was interested to hear about his experience so far and reflect on how things have changed for me since I have been back in the dating pool.

The truth is as you said as you get older you tend to have a lower tolerance for other people's B.S. and having the freedom and choice to be around them or being by yourself and doing what you want to do. I'm so used to being alone and doing what I want to do, its much less stressful, but I also do enjoy companionship, so it's a balance.

I’ve been with my Thai girlfriend for nearly 5 years. Somehow it works for us. I can do what I want, when I want, she can too. In all that time we live in a 48 sgm studio, can’t believe it myself. She often goes to see family for a few days, it just works!!

I've traveled solo for work 7-10 months a year, for the past 15 years. I have grown to enjoy my alone time over that period. It wasn't easy at first. Now I need a certain amount of "me" time. Some people get depressed when they are alone, I am the opposite. I tend to thrive emotionally. More introverted than I used to be. I just do not do well smothered anymore. It definitely showed in my last long term relationship, no matter how hard I tried to hide it haha. I have become tough to live with, but at least I can recognize and admit it.

Everyone is different. I found my best friend, soulmate in Thailand and brought her to California. Best thing ever. I can spend every min with her if I had too but she likes to work so we have our a part time. And I play a lot of golf. Us old guys are set in their ways and if you find one that respects that, it works.

Very good video, gives a clearer view of how to manage relationships in Thailand. For me, I’m trying to decide whether to be based in Bangkok or Pratumnak (Pattaya), and one factor is that Bangkok would have more “normal” women. But the idea that I *don’t* want to live in the same city (because I don’t want the pressure/expectation of seeing them all the time) is helpful, closer to how I want to live my life.

I thought Charles’ observation that all relationships are transactional is insightful. First, it becomes clearer that *we* can be firmer on how to define the terms of that “transaction” (instead of just rolling over to the woman’s pressures/expectations). And second, as Charles said, the value is SO MUCH BETTER in Thailand than the west. Fitter, younger, friendlier, more feminine, more agreeable. I’ve totally lost interest in dating women in the west … it’s just too complicated and not nearly as fun as it should be at our stage of life.

PS+ After my divorce in 2009. My roommate until he died and I retired to Thailand in 2021was my Boxer Dog. We never had an argument, he never demanded anything of me, was always happy when i took him to work with me, or when he stayed home was happy as hell when i got home.
