Join us as we explore Uma's, an authentic Uzbek food venture in the Rockaways that has transformed from humble home cooks into a beloved restaurant. The journey began with a group of friends from diverse backgrounds, including a former nurse, banker, and veterinarian, all sharing a passion for food.

They moved to NYC seeking better opportunities and started cooking without any professional training. Today, customers can be found requesting specific dishes by name, showcasing the restaurant's growing familiarity and love within the community. Uma's initially embraced a Eurasian label due to its rich influences, but it has since carved out its identity, reflecting the area's culinary renaissance.

As Uma's continues to thrive, it invites everyone to experience its unique offerings, highlighting the importance of community connection and the joy of sharing diverse flavors.

If you see the gentle looking old ladies working on the back you know the meal will be a banger

Nurse, bank, and vet.

They had to uproot everything and leave to a new country, start all over again.

Definitely much respect 🫡✊

First time I'm hearing a cook saying it's cuisine is influenced and not the original one. So humble, great job

I definitely prefer shorts like this one without added music; the calmness is a pleasant contrast to the other jazzed up ones most creaters produce!

In my small city of 100, 000 people, Sarasota FL, an Uzbek restaurant popped up. We have no Uzbek community here that I know of; most of the diners seem to be Russian. Glad to have it here though!

Definitely reminds me how hard the fall of the USSR was in its citizens, not only in Russia but the other republics. The 90s was truly a bad time for these folks

I really like your videos. Most social media content. Especially food and restaurant reviews are generic and very unauthentic. Your stuff is very genuine, refreshing, all the spots you show are unique and not often talked about enough. Keep up the great content!

Can you imagine being a nurse and then having to work in a kitchen? My hats off to them. They made a way out of no way.

Love your videos man, you make the focus so much about the people and their food, it's such a great change of pace from so many of the others out there. Keep up the amazing work!

I love Eurasian food man, it's so underrated and under represented even in my country where they're a bit of a bigger minority

The long noodle is called LAGMON and is close to Uygur (Chinese) dish lo mein (same word but pronounced differently). The steamed samosa looking ones is called MANTI (filled with pumpkin+onion or meat+onion). You should try them all and if they make TASHKENT SHASHLIK - that too! Thank you so much Rob!

As someone who was born and raised in the Rockaways, she’s right about the Renaissance in Rockaway.

Much like the rest of NYC, our town 20 years ago was the hood. And really it still is. But it’s improved drastically in such a short period of time, and UMA’s has been apart of this renaissance. This place is not brand new. They’ve been here for a long time. A lot longer most of these new places here.

It really is a gem of a restaurant, and it’s nice to see you visit the Rockaway’s Rob.

You need to make your way to Beach 97th to check out Whit’s End!! The owner Whit is an awesome dude. @EatingwithRobert
