ElasticSearch becoming open source again is a big deal.

It's been three years since elastic decided to remove the apache license from ElasticSearch and Kibana, and since then, we've seen a number of other companies follow suit.

Now, elastic is coming back, and perhaps the tide is shifting.

I don't see a problem with someone requesting compensation for their product, the real problem is the rug pull

AGPL means that people who let you use the software over a network (i.e. AWS) have to share their source. This is the open source way of solving their original problem with Amazon.

if a company re-opens their code, it usually means two things:
1. their product is not as competetive as they thought - people using it for free doesn't translate to 'people paying for using it'
2. they need some bugfixes and opensource community (aka 'suckers' as they are commonly referred to in the business) will test, debug and fix everything for free.

Update, because I've been clearly censored yet again.
I am talking about the perspective of the business, not the developer. The fact that someone is doing it for fun, for personal development or to improve their tool at their position/company.
Doesn't change the fact that what I said it 100% factual, no matter how much you gonna screech.

This new setup is gorgeous. Going to need a setup tour.

i wonder if they would have ended up with the same result if Elastic went to AGPL directly. I don't think the amazon lawyers would have signed off on using AGPL (although it is probably fine). Also its one of the weirdest tech blogposts I've ever read.

"Free Software" and "Open Source/Initiative" are not the same thing. They share alot of the same ideals, but the Free Software Foundation does not recognize many OSI's licenses as free software (as in "freedom" or "Libre").

Just fyi but the stock is down due to missed q1 earnings, not necessarily due to the license change

Keep experimenting DOC, I enjoy listening to your voice so doesn't matter what kind of content you make it's always informative.

This makes sense and I think the next announcement is going to be about their serverless version. Sure Elasticsearch and Kibana being opensource is good, but I have no doubt that, that won't include things like their AI assistant, and other features and separate applications.

Why do we have to learn the hard way that the gnu licenses are the best? : (

this is better than open source, it is libre since AGPL is free software. I hope companies understand that free software is the better endgame (and definitely better for the user)

Why this waffling? Did they really thinkAmazon would care about the revised license enough to actually pay them instead of realizing forks gonna fork?

I know that elastic search is used a lot and this is a big deal, but it’s one of the most overly complicated and annoying pieces of software I’ve ever tried to use.

This seems like less of a win for open source, and more of a win for Amazon. If they hadn't used their market power to get what they wanted this wouldn't have happened.

We need a new name for "Born Again" Software 😂

Yeah Elastic can get bent. Spent way too much time dealing with the fallout of their tantrum, and now they just want us to trust them again?

Can somebody explain when one might want to use this thing?

Omg, you're not kidding, that Redis logo is hideous.

icl this video is genuinely not what I was after. It's 3 minutes long and doesn't provide any depth, and just seems like a bot made it after consuming the piece of news. ChatGPT could do a better job of talking about this. If a story isn't big enough to warrant a video, don't just compromise on your quality and content so far just to deliver it.
