As long as it has ammo and water, it'll fire forever. Gotta appreciate Maxim's craftsmanship

The Vickers Maxim machine gun was not retired from British military service until 1968. After NATO standardisation, the Vickers was re-barrelled and re-chambered for the 7.62×51mm NATO standard cartridge. The Vickers was, for all practical purposes, indestructible. At its retirement, it was decided to do a destruction test on the Vickers. The gun crews worked in shifts, and a continuous supply of water(for cooling jacket) and ammunition was provided. Over 11, 000, 000 rounds and 6 days later the gun crews gave up.

The short asnwer would be: "Because it works."
Maxim is obsolete, heavy and is made from many, little parts but still it's very capable machinegun. Water cooling may be a nuisance but it also means that you can fire much longer before barrel overheats.

It doesn't matter how old the machine gun is as long as you have parts for it, ammo, and it shoots straight it will do its job

“Hold on, I need to refill my machine gun.”
“You mean reload?”
“No, we’re still good on ammo.”

There is something amazing about a 139 year old gun still being useful.

Not many know this, but Maxim also invented the Silencer/Suppressor and Vehicle muffler.

Imagine samurai encountering this during the Battle of Shiroyama. It’s like comparing Greek fire to when it was first used in the 7th century

Fun fact: The creator of the machine gun actually began deaf because he was using it way to much

Actually it wasn’t phased out in the 40’s, my Great Grandfather fought in the Pacific and his weapon was the Water Cooled Machine gun. There is a photo we have at home of him standing next to the machine gun. The gun was retired in the 60’s.

1884 guys, to be 130 years old and still be of great use IN 2024 is amazing. The advancements we have made in 200 years are incredible. In that amount of time we are moving at light speed

The M2 is also over a century old and is still a mainstay in the US arsenal. If it ain't broken don't fix it.
