The priest deciding to help them and entering the house at the end felt like an Avenger making a grand opening.

The fact that the possessed girls were glorified background characters in their own movie was so frustrating. Kinda hard to give a shit about them when their only character traits are “they are children and they are friends”

The black and white footage in the trailer was a reference to a banned trailer for the original. This is unironicaly the best thing that came out of Believer.

I happened to catch an interview with the directors on TV the other day and they said "It's not as easy to scare people now as it was back then" and "Audiences today have such short attention spans, you have to change the movie to work around that" and that told me everything I need to know to not watch this movie lol

Something I hated about it was that it doesn't understand the dread of the original exorcist. You dreaded the eventual exorcism because you didn't know how it was going to turn out. Believer just played it in the table. The original exorcist is so layered. The exorcist believer is shallower than a kiddy pool. Very disappointing

Norbert Leo Butz is an amazing Broadway actor, one of the few with two Tonys for his acting (only nine people have ever done that). His film work is limited. But I've heard frequently that stage performers can often go way too big on screen, especially with a bad director, because a Broadway star's version of "go big!" is often way, way too big for the screen, especially for a flashy performer like Butz. He played the original Fiyero in Wicked and played Alfred P Doolittle in the recent revival of My Fair Lady, both big, showy, over-the-top parts. Anyway. Don't knock him just for sucking in this movie.

William Friedkin said before his passing that if there is a spirit world, and he comes back, that he will possess David Gordon Green and make his life a living hell. I hope he follows through with that threat.

Karsten, it has recently come to my attention that Robots (2005) was nominated for not one, not two, but _three_ DVD Exclusive Awards. This movie confidently arrived on the scene, and people took notice.

Fun fact: I first saw the trailer during an IMAX showing for Oppenheimer, and two things:
1. The "missing for three days" made me think it was about dimensional travel or alien abduction.
2. Everyone, literally EVERYONE, in the audience (and it was Oppenheimer opening weekend) just went "I'm not seeing that."

Here's a PSA for everyone:
WATCH THE EXORCIST 3.
It's so damn good.

It’s funny how the Pope’s Exorcist felt more like a sequel to the Original Exorcist than the actual sequel we got

One great example of something super innocuous yet unsettling from the original is the scene where Regan says "You're going to die up there" and pees on the floor. It's so simple, but it's frightening because of how unnatural and strange it is. I can't imagine the new film does anything close to that creepy and creative.

If you’ve seen David Gordon Green’s Halloween movies, specifically the third one, this is not surprising in the least. KEEP THIS MAN AWAY FROM HORROR!! To quote the late great William Friedkin: “Ed, the guy who made these new ‘Halloween’ is about to make one to my movie, “The Exorcist.” That’s right, my signature film is about to be extended by the man who made “Pineapple Express.” I don’t want to be around when that happens. But if there’s a spirit world, and I come back, I plan to possess David Gordon Green and make his life a living hell.”

I think Karsten’s Raycon ad had more creative cinematography than anything in this movie.

The moment I gave up on the movie and realised that the people making it had no respect for or understanding of the original was when Chris MacNeil said that she was kept from going into the room during the exorcism in the first movie because of "the patriarchy"... No. No you weren't. You were kept out because you didn't have any faith and because you were too close and connected to the possessed girl on account of her being your daughter. Imagine saying about the two men who died saving your daughters life "yeah, but they were a bit of a boy's club, amirite?"... Just unbelievable. Such a weak and eye-rolling attempt to say "we're hip, we're with it, we're progressive" while spitting in the face of the characters of the original movie.

P.S. fuck off if you're just going to rag on feminism, feminists and women in the comments - that's not my point.

When me and my older brother watched the trailer for this movie, I joked that “What if instead of one exorcism, it’s *two* exorcism.” Glad to know that my general disinterest is validated.

Leslie Odom Jr. & Norbert Leo Butz are super talented Broadway actors. Someone shoulda let them know.

This movie set up so many premises that could have been something and fumbled them all in varying degrees. Two girls possessed...fumbled.
They were missing for three days but it felt like hours to them...fumbled.
A team of relative strangers have to team up to defeat a demon... fumbled.
The choices at the beginning and end of the movie...fumbled.
Legacy character brought back... Fumbled

What they did with Ellen Burstyns iconic character, Chris MacNeil is abhorrent. They did to her character what Terminator Dark Fate did to Sarah Connor and then threw her away like The Last Jedi threw away Luke Skywalker. I mean, whats with that patriarchy comment?? She totally trashes the two male priests that saved her daughter. How dare those men keep Chris MacNeil safe from the abusive demon?
