I imagine the "thin blue paper" line resembling the cloth people put on one for surgery. The "crimson later" would resemble the fact that, if a surgeon messes up, they can cause bleeding and possibly death. I'm not sure if they use the blue cloth for human surgeries, but I know veterinarians do for animals.
