I have my own handyman business and take great confidence in my prices. When the home owner complains about price for a job, I educate them about what a skilled person costs to do a job that requires extensive knowledge concerning their trade.
1) The average cost for air conditioning repair is between $50-$100 for a service fee and $300 if you need both labor and parts
2) Electricians usually charge between $50 to $100 per hour
3) The cost of a plumber ranges from $175 to $450 for a typical job with the average cost per hour ranging from $45 to $200
4) Highly experienced painters can charge up to $70 per hour
5) Is it really too much to charge $60 an hour for doing ALL FOUR ??? Plus fix your appliances? If you cant pay $60 for someone to help fix your home in any way....
then you can't afford to own a house.

God bless you man. Drives me crazy when people making GOOD salaries (and many at rather cush type jobs) complain about how much the tradesperson charges or charged them... It's basically Looking Down On tradespeople without expressly saying it. Yet they're somehow "entitled" to be making $400-$500 a day or more - because they wear dress clothes to work, work in front of a computer, and went to college for a few extra years.... Love your videos "handyman" - thanks for all the great advice, demonstrations, and tips - keep up the good work.

I am not the most experienced person in the handyman arena.. But I learned how to use the internet (and I do have some skills) and I completely support myself and 3 kids and wife from my business. I’m 28 and doing this for 7 years. Guys YOU CAN DO IT! It’s ok if you don’t know how to do everything it’s ok just do what you know! You can do odd and end jobs and get by and get started.

Real talk. Getting rich off of hipsters who can't change a toilet flapper.

We get the same thing with cutting trees. $2000 $3000 $5000 omg!

Well you do it then. Bring your own crane.

Spot on about the basic principles. As long as Handymen just see a ceiling fan installation or blind installation, they'll never get out of the habit of charging basic rates. They don't understand that these people are paying for getting a job done by someone they trust to do it right, and getting it done ASAP.

Great video man. In my area I find that a lot of younger people/couples/families simply dont have the knowledge or tools to do the simple repairs or even improvements... for example, replace a toilet flapper valve, hang blinds, replace a light fixture, replace a garage door threshold seal, etc. If you do decent work, are honest and trustworthy in their homes, are reliable, most customers dont have a problem paying the extra money to get the work done. A lot of times I'll show up for simple things and when I meet the home owner, I end up getting TONS more work when they walk me around the house and ask "can you look at this? Do you know how to do this?, etc"

I’ve been using a lot of your advice lately and my business is be recognized more and more each day. Like you said anybody can install a ceiling fan but it’s HIGH RIDGE HANDYMAN they want bro! I charge a fair price for my area, when I say I’ll be there I’m there and I do exactly what they want and they trust me! I took you advise on building myself into a local brand and it’s working. Thanks again!!
Catch you on the next one👍

You're spot-on about how the markets change with new younger people moving in and changing a neighborhood. DC Metro area is a prime example. Many of the blue collar middle class areas where housing prices were fairly cheap have went up to a million plus or more especially after a remodel or knock down and rebuild. Then comes the infrastructure to serve that new clientele. Perfect market for a handyman or contractor. Appreciate your videos and the education you're giving the younger guys starting out and refreshing the minds of the oldtimers 👍

I sometimes think I've under charged when I'm on a job and then they ask me while I'm there to fix an old window that hasn't closed for 10 years, so I take my electric plane out and fix it in 15 minutes.
If I'm on the job already and charging em for my time by the hour it's $60 per hour, so only 15 bucks to fix the window that they couldn't fix for 10 years.
But that kind of thing they remember and I get call back for something else, or they recommend me to their neighbours. And if it's a good customer and they call me back and we're familiar with each other, then that's a valuable things too, much prefered to dealing with unknown customers for me.
It's hard to say if I should have charged more. I think sometimes there's a balance between getting the most dollars for a job v creating good will and having less anxiety in life.

"I used to throw knives at a tree"
I can't think of a better ending to a video.
I'm so happy to hear someone state the fact of supply and demand when it comes to prices. People make you feel bad for charging them an realistic amount.

In Chicago we call what you talk about with working in the city.
Parking, tickets, traffic, time, etc. The " hassle factor ". And you can charge more for that. Period.

I have found that if a potential customer does not like my price and I lower it a bit to get the job, I should have walked away and counted my blessings. That few dollars discounted did not pay for the crap I had to deal with at the site.
Here is a valid question for you.. What is a more eloquent way of saying, "I don't care to listen to your political views even if I agree with you" and "Go away.. I work better without you asking me questions and telling me about your BFF's friends next door neighbors son that works with a guy who has a nephew who is married to his high school sweet heart who's dad is a handyman in the Florida Keys. Especially, while in my personal space with your 2 day old coffee breath!"

They don’t like the bid, then I don’t do the job! Simple.. I only want to work with clients that want to work with me. Nothing good comes from lowering your price/bid.. keep it moving and find good clients willing to pay for good work.

I am of a dying breed. A millwright. Most people, outside of the construction trades, don't even know what one is. So, I can relate to this video. Before I retired they were replacing us on many jobs with general maintenance workers. No skills to speak of. Not journeymen. And the results were abundantly evident. In the end, you get what you pay for.

If no one is complaining about the price you are charging too little.
