TEDxNASA - Bruce Wielicki - Climate Change: Fact And Fiction

Clouds affect the energy Earth receives, keeps and emits back to space --
it's all a matter of balance. Dr. Bruce Wielicki is senior scientist for Earth
science at NASA's Langley Research Center. His research has focused on
clouds and their role in Earth's radiative energy balance for more than 25
years. He served as principal investigator on NASA's CERES science team
and as co-investigator on the CALIPSO missions. NASA is now gearing up
for a mission to compile the most accurate climate data ever. Dr. Wielicki
is Mission Scientist for CLARREO which will provide accurate, credible
and tested climate records that lay the groundwork for decisions on
policies that address the effects of climate change on society.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Very persuasive, but remember models do not produce scientific facts. I would like to see a comparison of ipcc reports for the last decade, that will give us an accurate picture of the accuracy of their climate models and how accurately their predictions from 2010 to 2020 were compared to the actual data collected.

So if the 3 rules are accuracy accuracy accuracy, why is that none of the hundreds of climate models, past or present, are not accurate, which in turn throws out the accuracy of the information released which also contributes the lack of accuracy of decisions of policy makers to help?

Because accuracy is so important, how shall we account for scientists manipulating their data?

The title claims he was going to give the fact and fiction of the climate change argument. In fact he did no such thing. He merely stated things as if they are accepted already....and where and who we should believe. I was seriously hoping to hear something that I could think about but this guy did not do so and was merely giving the pro climate change side of things and the typical reasons, which were actually few in his talk.

As a physicist I have been struggling for years to find the evidence (data) behind the statement “climate change is driven by human activity”. So far I have not succeeded so I am agnostic about it. All I can find is distorted information spread by media, the internet, politicians.... and a gazillion priests telling: “it is too complex to understand, you have to trust me...”. This issue is becoming a religion, a matter of faith. The general public should be more critical, ask more questions, and scientists more pedagogic, closer to the people helping them to detect and dismiss impostors.

Interresting lesson how to brainwash and frame people.

I had Hope's at the beginning of the talk that this may be a non-biased take on the whole issue...

Then the "scientist are fallacy-proof", "IPCC is the best thing we got" and other controlled propaganda hit slogans were pushed forward...

Thumbs down.

Accuracy. Why do the goal posts keep changing?? Did not algore predict snows gone from Kilimanjaro by now. Still there. So much for accuracy.

Sounded great until the “there’s a whole book about it” part and that scientific research and biased results aren’t happening so as to gain funding. Yes, scientists are people that like money just like anyone else. Thats why proper non political non emotional scientific debate must openly occur. Leave egos behind. That’s why open non censored debate of data is a necessity. Whether it fits into the current political hot keys for funding or not.

I had just watched before this video on how volcanoes had an impact on changes in climate. How volcanoes spewing gases high into atmosphere caused ozone depletion and warmer temperatures. Other volcanoes, similar to what happened/happening in Hawaii and Iceland contributed to cooling by blocking sunlight. Bottom line there are so many events that affects climate that it continue to change no matter what we do.

Climate has ever been changing! And, the temperature has been changing repeatedly up or down, and, ten times more during the last thousands of years than currently observed. You cannot state anything about the causes of the current change, nor about its trend, because what we are currently observing, is below the noise level! And, your time scale of observations is all too short. We cannot change the climate, and hopefully never will! But, it is absolutely very important to try to predict the changes and adjust, because ofcourse, the climate will change.

Accuracy of information to the public begins with saying x amount of warming is cyclic, y amount of warming is CO2 and z amount of warming is methane. Until you present the data like you are not trying to hide something, you will sound like you are hiding something. Everybody who is paying attention knows the planet should warm up cyclically and knows extra CO2 warms the planet extra, and is still waiting to hear how much the planet should warm up and how much warming is extra.

I was a bit confused.
I thought the lecture was about clouds and the weather but I missed out on a segment I think ?

it is 2019 now. how much did IPCC predicted the sea level will rise so far?
BS...

Say this is 100% correct, what is the practical outcome from this, world ends in 12 years? Is their a range of outcomes and could your information be incomplete? Does The Paris Accord and The Green New deal really remedy this? What is the solution?

What i have a tough time with is....i can find climatologists that say its a natural event. The climate changes. None of their sea rise predictions have come true.

The speaker insists that climate and weather are seperate disciplines. 8ut whenever we have severe weather incidents, climate change is always blamed.
